I must be addicted to .44s!
« on: May 22, 2012, 10:28:36 PM »
Through much of my 18 years in CAS, I have favored the .44, shooting: .44 Colt, .44  Russian, .44-40, and .44 Colt and Remington Percussion revolvers.  I even had a .44-77 Sharps rolling block and English Webley .44  Bulldog pocket pistol at one point.  My current CAS armory includes a .44-40 Marlin 1894 Century Limited and a pair of .44-40 1873 Colt clones.

My non-CAS armory currently includes a 1970s vintage S&W Model 29 .44 Magnum 8 3/8" Magna-ported, and a newly acquired 1970s vintage Charter .44 Bulldog 3" (replacing the same type Bulldog I carried for 10 or 12 years as an LEO off-duty and back up weapon.  In the past it included several 1894 Marlins and a Ruger semi-auto carbine in .44 Magnum, and even an original 1889 and pre-1900 1894 Marlins in .44-40.

I have accumulated several thousand of differing types of .44 slugs from .428" to .431" diameter, and .44 dies in several calibers  through the years.

I don't think I will ever be cured of this addiction, though I have no desire to be cured, either!

As you can guess from my screen name I also have this affliction.  My favorite 44 is the 1860 Army and I couldn't tell you how many variants I have.  They include two Belgian Centaurs and cartridge conversions in 44 Colt.   44-40 is my favorite cartridge and I have three Colt clones and a Uberti S&W breaktop repro in that caliber.  I also have an old model Vaquero in 44 Magnum.  Except for one 1860 with a 5.5 inch barrel, all of these have 7 inch barrels or longer.  I'm not into short barrels.
As for modern guns, like you, I have an older Model 29- 8 3/8's barrel and a Ruger Super Blackhawk.  I also have a Charter Bulldog that was the first or second handgun I ever bought back in 1975.  It has the hammer spur bobbed and was also my off duty gun when I was LEO.  But by far, my favorite modern 44 is my Taurus Raging Bull, 8 3/8 barrel with a Burris red dot scope.  It has taken many deer and a friend of mine shot an elk with it.
I also have a 44 Evans rifle, but have yet to fabricate ammo for it.
I have a fantasy wildcat cartidge that I call the 44 SLP (self loading pistol) which is the 45 ACP reduced in size from a 451 bullet to a 429 bullet.  Case and head diameter would just be made proportionately smaller and cartridge length would stay the same, using 180 to 210 grain bullets.  All in a 1911 platform.
   Freakish for 44's.

Yup Lawman...  sounds like you got the 44 bug pretty good!  Mine is more a 45 Colt addiction but I do have a back-up set of CAS guns in 44-40.  A 7.5 inch SAA mated to a 3 inch Sheriff's model with the companion rifle being a 24 inch Yellow Boy.  I can certainly see where a man would derive a great deal of pleasure in owning and shooting lots of 44's.  Have you seen Gary Reeder's Scorpion?

Yes, I saw that, cool gun, but only 5 shot, disappointment.  A future project I have in mind is converting a 357 New Model Vaquero to 44 Special.

The current issue of American Handgunner has a good article on 44 sp. and 44 mag.  It's on the last page.   8)

Yup...  Reeder should have made the Scorpion a six shooter.  I can understand why the 500 magnum Grim Reaper is only 5 shots.

a friend built me a .44 special on a model 28 "N" frame highway p. it's one of the most accurate handguns I own(1 1/2 group at 50 yards from a machine rest). (and that includes a couple of 6 inch 41 mag.s that I have )and that started me on .44's   and yes the .44 has a 6 inch barrel. but my 1860 open top repro.(read that Uberit!) is in .44 special.  with a 7 inch barrel. but my pedersoli pump is in .44-40. and my model 544 smith is in .44-40.  I pour for .44 bullets but a Lee trim sizer lets me size for .44 special or .44-40. and I do have a .38-40 SSA and you people are right! it's a sweethear too. (just try the 32-20, O" what a sweet heart!)  I really think the .44's are a bit more accurate than the .45's but there is nothing wrong with the .45's, come try my Smith performance center .45LC with 6 inch barrel. it's pretty accurate.

The .44's I own include a .44mag Taurus SS 4 inch ported barrel. A 16-1/2 inch barreled Remington Rolling Block in .44 mag.   2- 1858 5-1/2 inch barrel Pietta Remington's. 1- Pietta 1851 Confederate Navy 5-1/2 barrel Brass frame. 1 AMS  3rd model Colt Dragoon. I'm wanting a .44 mag Rossi Circuit Judge but that's on the back burner right now. :'(

Sorta got seriously into the 44 family by accident.  Started shooting BP rifles and thought a C&B revolver would be fun.  Fast Forward about 8-9 years and I am in a gun show in El Paso. A 99% Super Blackhawk 10 inch barreled with Uncle Mikes shoulder holster for $250 was way to good a deal to pass up even though I did not want a 44 mag, too much gun.  A bisley Blackhawk, 5 vaqueros, 2 1860s, a second 58 remmie, a rossi 92 carbine and hartford 92 rifle later I might be close to getting started on being hooked.  Mostly  shoot 44 spec level loads
