kinetic bullet puller?
« on: September 20, 2013, 10:06:24 AM »
I'm thinking of getting a certain 32 S&W top break which I would reload for with black powder. The only factory cartridges I find online are about $25 per 50 at Sportsman Guide (online).

Is it possible to easily pull the bullets, dump the powder and then reload with BP. I reload BP for 45 colt and 32-20 etc. but never pulled bullets.

Would the kinetic pullers (a plastic hammer looking thing) probably allow pulling pistol bullets without damaging the cases (I have no experience with these pullers).

Thanks!

I just did that last week.  I pulled the bullets of some factory .32 S&W using a green plastic RCBS kinetic puller and reloaded them with APP for use in my S&W top break fourth model.  The hole in the puller's collet is too large for the .32.  So I had to add a flat washer above the collet with a hole drilled to the size of the .32 case.  The pullers work OK, but you need to hit them on a hard surface like concrete to get the factory crimp to break loose.  It took me about 8 or 10 hits to get each loose.

Mine is blue - Franklin Arsenal I think is the brand - it comes with multiple collets to fit any cartridge.  The instructions say to use a padded surface but concrete reall works better & I have yet to break it. If it does break, it has already paid for the 17 or so dollars I paid for it.

If the collet won't work you can also use a shell holder in the bullet puller.  I just whack it on a lead ignot.  Works great.

I have used shell holders from .32 to .50 my RCBS kinetic puller with no problems at all.  If you reload a lot you need one.

Thanks folks, sounds like it should work out well.

I have another question about shooting the 32 S&W with APP replica powder. How easy is it to clean the topbreak gun afterwards? In other words is disassembling the revolver necessary (especially since I'm going to use Pyrodex which is corrosive)?

I never disassemble my Blackhawk but I use Hercro smokeless, not too messy.

APP cleans up with just a couple patches. Its very clean, much like smokeless for clean up.

I have read in forums that APP require no wads for some type of shooting where real black powder needs a wad. So with APP fffG can I use just the powder under the lubed bullet, or should I also use a lubed wad between powder and bullet? (this is 32 S&W caliber cartridges in an H&R break open revolver that was made in 1891 or 1892).

Thanks!

I think just APP is all you need.  No need for anything else.  But contrary to what it states on te APP container, lube your bullets .

Has anybody seen or tried this one?

I just received an email about it yesterday.

Looks like a fancy pair of pliers.  It may work fine on jacketed bullets, but I doubt it would pull soft lead bullets without damage.

I also wonder how well that grip and pull would work on pistol caliber lead bullets. Looks really neat for modern rifle rounds but I would think it might deform lead bullets and there isn't much to grip on some pistol bullets.

As others have said the Kinetic hammer type pullers work really good and I've used them taking cowboy loads apart with no damage to the components.

I also would stay away from Pyrodex. After the noise and smoke clears, you can listen closely and hear your gun rust.

+1 on this type of puller works great on jacketed bullets not so great on soft cast bullets. I have an RCBS collet puller that I use for jacketed but use the kinetic for cast. Even the instructions of the collet pullers say they don't work with cast bullets, at least the RCBS.

This was one of my concerns also especially on .45 ACP rounds.
