Powder Measure for black powder



I am going to load some 38 special with black powder after I get off drugs
 I am on vicodin and muscle relaxer for my back.

 I have read not to use
 RCBS Uniflow
 Lee Perfect Powder Measure

 Because plastic can build up a static electric spark that can set of black powder

 Then they tell you to use Lee dippers that are made of plastic

 I am really confused now.

Macafee won't let me go to this site even though I have visited often in the past?

I use the Lee Dippers a lot, and with BP. On the other hand I don't put BP through a reloading machine. BP dust can linger and get mucky if damp, but others use the static free adaptions of powder measures without known problems.

Some say that a static electric accident with BP hasn't been noted, but others say why risk it.  I find the dippers and an electronic scale (if precision is demanded) do for the amount of shooting I do.

I've used several measures with black powder and the Hornady measure has worked out the best for me.  It throws consistently, is easy to adjust, cleans up easily.

But, the set of Lee dippers has gotten a lot of use too !!!!!!!!!  And, the set only costs 12 bucks, or so.

I have also use the Lee Dippers and I have a Lee plastic funnel on top of my drop tube. If you are afraid of static electricity rub them down with a static guard dryer sheet before use. This helps with powder sticking to the plastic too. My B.P. is also poured out into a small plastic bowel that I dip it out of.  But remember it is what ever you fell safe doing. If you dont feel safe with plastic. You can all ways make you some dippers out of old brass shells and pick up a brass funnel. A buddy of mine just used his powder horn with a brass valve assy and pre set measure tubes to fill his B.P cartridges.

The Lyman 55 classic powder measure is designed specifically for black powder.  I've used one for several years and love it.  Very consistent results.

I have used the RCBS Uniflow with no issues whatsoever.

I also use the standard Lyman 55 (not the b.p. one) which has graduations for b.p. measure (at least my older orange colored one does).

And, on occassion, when I am working up loads and am not loading a volume of cartridges, I use my old Belding & Mull from which
the MVA measure was copied.

ONCE YOU USE A MEASURE WITH B.P., remove the drum and wipe down the inside of the measure that contains the drum and the outside of the drum.  If you don't, after a time the b.p. residue will likely cause a binding of sorts due to possible oxidation.

I have the black powder Lyman #55 that I use for most of my BP loading.  I also have an RCBS Little Dandy set up for my cap & ball loads and the .45 Cowboy Specials.  Both work great.  The #55 also works great with most smokeless powders.

As w44wcf stated, be sure to wipe the hopper down when you finish.  If you live in a humid area you might find the mechanism rusted tight in a few days of non use.
