100 yard sight in
« on: March 19, 2012, 05:16:52 PM »
I have my Uberti '73, 44-40 sighted in at 50 yards.  I am shooting a 200 gn bullet and pushing about 1000 fps.  My question is about how much will the bullet drop in 100 yards from my 50 yard sight in?

Thanks

You can do all the calculations that you want to, but the only realway to find out is to shoot at something 100 yards away and see how farlow the bullet strikes. There are about ten different ways to calculate it, but in that it is only going to be something in the neighborhood of two to three inches, why not just shoot it and see? That way you are going to know for sure.

Here is a simple and easy to use ballistic calculator.  You can work it out yourself, as it includes a simple methed of estimating ballistic coefficient;

http://www.handloads.com/calc/index.html

I find 75 yards is a good point to zero a pistol caliber rifle.  It will be no more than a couple of inches high at 25X and 50X and the drop at 100X is manageable.  Also calculate & field test out to 200, or more if you want to try a "Gus" shot on a sweaty, dirty, miserable buffler hunter

+1 for the Handloads.com ballistic calculator.  I use it for all of my weapons.  If you use a 25 yard range, just figure your load zeroed at 75, and have it print the appropriate distance above POA at 25.  With the load you describe, 2" above POA at 25 would put you on at 75.  My Marlin 44-40 Century Limited I load to about 1250 fps, and sight at 75 dead on POA.  That translates into 1.25" high at 25.  That puts it 3 inches low at 100 yards.  Now for my 1900+ fps 200 JSP Taffin hunting load (Marlin 94 and Winchester 92 ONLY) load, I sight at 100 yards, which is  3/4" high at 25 yards.  It should be a deer and hog thumper, with still over 1000 ft lbs of energy at 100 yards.
