How about a fantisy gun side match?
« on: January 23, 2012, 09:58:41 PM »
Reading all the threads on the Mare's leg pistol has got me thinking, How about a 1 or 2 stage side match that used a gun or guns that are "old west" in flavor if not actually historical, and don't have a place in any main match events.

The mares leg is the first one that comes to mind, but the new EMF pepper box on the navy frame is another interesting gun that might be fun to shoot. the LeMat is another one that people seem to love but isn't practical as a main match gun. Then there is the revolving rifles and the detachable shoulder stocks for the cap-n-ball pistols. Again all really neat guns without a place to shoot in our sport. maybe even some pre-1900 double actions

A simple 5 shot stage with targets at the max pistol/minimum rifle distance. 2 classes, cartridge or cap-n-ball
no other division needed. Maybe a .22 class for even more chance at variety. Could be a quick and fun warm up or cool down at a monthly or a "something different" for an annual match. Could even just call it an "open" match.

See what happens when I get to thinkin'?

You could have a Bearcat show down. Cheap and fun!  I wonder why the Lemat isn't more popular. You can combine the shotgun and rifle and pistol to a large extent.  Load nine rounds plus the center in each and lay down some pretty good fire. If I could get one that ran on musket caps I'd do it.

A fine idea, IMHO.
I was doing some looking the other day and ran across a very fine looking pistol. It was an 1851 w/ cartridge conversion pluse a custom made "Thunderer" style grip. It seems that there are a few similar threads at CAS. I am sure that the pistols are far from being "SASS legal", much like the Mare's Laig. But, it would fit right in with a fantasy gun match. The technology is there, if not the authenticity... it is something that could have and should have been made but never was... though who knows exactly what individuals had done to their gun, that we don't see in catalogs.

It sounded like the fella was using it main match. The rules make exceptions for mass produced grip frame designs. So it should be legal as I read it. The birds head  frames are approved to install on any saa or its modern replicas, but not with Bisley hammers. Sass shooter's handbook page 8.

I actually wondered about this very thing and meant to ask about it, especially after I read more about the hybrid pistol. If I understand it correctly, the original manufactured grip fits directly onto the 51 and 62 Navy. I really like the looks of the pistol and want to do some more research into it.
