If they're for show, light leather is fine.
If you're going for authenticity and utility, use the heavier.

What Skeeter said is true if you're using chrome tanned chap leather, which was first described in 1858 , but was not used commercially in the states or elsewhere until after 1878 when it was first patented in England at the earliest and more likely not until the mid to late 1880.'s  The first USA commercial production of chrome tanned leather was in New York after January 8, 1884 when it was patented by Augustus Schultz  .

If you plan on using veg/bark tan than I woudn't go over 3/4 oz.
