Auto-ordance Tommy hard to cock
« on: July 23, 2015, 11:54:53 AM »
Any one else have a problem with these?  I have one of the T5 models (aluminum frame) and not bad until the final inch and half and then it is bear to get the rest of the way.

I came across something called EZ springs but the maker says they won't fit that model.   :( Is there a big difference between the receivers in the aluminum and the steel receiver models?

Thanks

I don’t know much about the aluminum receiver models or the EZ spring kit. But I do have some insight I’ll share. In my experience, the Thompsons do need to be broken in. This is usually a few hundred shots or cycling the action the same amount. After this it should be easier to cock. The design is such that it will always have powerful springs to put the heavy bolt into battery.

Mine has an aluminum receiver too and has a gawd-awful heavy main spring too which is compounded by the contour of the bolt handle. You kind of get used to it over time.
The good news is that you usually only have to cock it twice per stage.  ;)

As an owner of both a 1927A1 and a TM1, both steel frames. I can say the TM1 (WW II style) is easier to cock as the cocking handle is on the right side of the receiver instead of the top,  especially with the extended cocking handle from Auto Ordnance. One tip I can offer for the 1927A1 is to wear a glove on the hand that is operating the cocking handle. The gloved hand can apply fore force. I'm right handed so I wear a glove on my left hand.

Good advice.  I like the glove thing.

I did come across these but the manufacturer says they only work in the steel frame version (no explanation why).

The aluminum frame cannot take the battering the steel frame, thus a stronger recoil spring to minimize the impact of the bolt against the back of the frame.
Civilize them with a Krag . . .
