It is not Facebook or the internet that is the problem, but the people on it that think that it is "funny" to screw with a stranger for no legitimate reason or to try to get some advantage, usually in terms of dollars, from thre information that is placed on the internet by well meaning people that just want to talk about common interests, goals or friends. Remember that "We have met the enemy, and he is US!"

I feel your pain Rick.  Despite all the protections my computer keeps getting virused.  The Geek Squad had my last computer for several weeks and never could find or fix the problem.  It was still under warrenty so we got a new computer.  We had the new one for around six weeks and it crashed.  It was fixed by the geeks in about ten days.  The only good thing is they now put convenient carrying handles on top of them, I guess because they know you're going to have to bring it back over and over again.  It seems like when it's not a computer problems it's an isp problem.  I too, have just about had it with this "head-ache maker".   >:(

Come on now fellas. We have to take accopuntability for our own actions. If we put our information out to the world in any public forum we are opening ourselves to the scrutiny of total strangers. As we well know, some of these strangers have no scruples and will use this information to either steal from us or play their childish "jokes" in the form of viruses on us. I think that it must make them feel that they have some sense of power over us. I think that it is sad that any person's life is so empty that they would resort to something like that. We know that they are out there and that we invite them into our lives when we post to the internet. It isn't a matter of IF they will attack it's a matter of WHEN. People chide me about spending about $12.00 a month for AOL service and an additional $5.00 for added protection from AOL, but I have not had a successfull virus or a trojan horse or spyware attack since I got their service. The special AOL/MACAFE software that they provide has, in the last two years, automatically deleted or rejected dozens of attempts to infiltrate my computer. The only thing that I did have happen was when someone hacked or dicoverd somehow my AOL mailbox password and used it to send out Viagra offers to everyone on my mailing list. A simple change of password solved that problem.

The virus protection sellers need new virus attacks to keep their business profitable.

Fortunately, they create fixes when they create the viruses. How convenient. :o

bugscuffle is right in that you have to be smart and not open up unsolicited stuff, don't forward stuff to all your friends because you think it's cute or funny, and be cautious about freely reposting things like youtube.com stuff because that can carry unwanted programming.

All data can be farmed for profit. Which sites you go to; what things you 'like' on facebook; if you take a survey or fill out a contest online; whenever you order something off the internet - all are useful tools to profile and market to your demographic.

You also should realize all personal info such as real estate sale transactions, automobile sales, property tax assessments etc. - anything that is a matter of public record is available on the internet.
Just think about the last time you ordered a pizza to be delivered and they told you your address. That's an internet program.

What kind of antivirus are those of you that are frequently getting hit with viruses using and what types of webs sites are you surfing?

Don't blindly click on links.  When you mouse over a link almost any browser will display the address of the link somewhere.  Watch where the link is taking you and if the url looks funny then don't go to it.  When you join a new forum, group or anywhere that you have to enter personal information make sure that you know their privacy policies.  If you enter credit card or other payment information make sure that the page that you enter it on is secure.

Can't go anywhere without Facebook being shoved in my Face, the internet was fine without them..I don't mind a social place to talk to friends and kin,but it is not like that anymore, the world needs a Facebreak!Get on the net anymore and you spend your time cleaning spam, running virus protection, deleting the Facebook trash...Oh well, this is why i never wanted a computer.Shame on me!
