Best High Volume mold for 38 cal Cowboy bullets
« on: July 26, 2010, 07:42:03 AM »
I need to start casting for 38 cal cowboy loads. Which mold produces the best bullet for reliability and accuracy using 38 special brass in a Marlin 1894C microgroove and Ruger Vaqueros? I am looking at the Lyman 358-477 and 358-665 4 cavity and the Lee 358-158-RF and 358-150-1R 6 cavity. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The lyman is a fine mold, but it's heavy, so in reality, your high speed session may be limited by fatigue.  Enter the Lee aluminum molds.  They are lighter, a little fussier to get working right, but once you get em sorted, are capable of making a pile of bullets before the wrists and elbows tell ya you're done for the day.  Either will make perfectly good cowboy bullets.

Recommend you look at the big lube bullet molds offered by Dick Dastardly.  The 158 grain big lube is particularly well suited to use in lever guns.  The newly manufactured molds that Dick is offering are very good quality and many steps up on the Lee product, IMHO.

For BP I use the Big Lubes, for smokeless the Lee six cavity 125gr & 158gr. Once you get the lead and mold good and hot I can run two molds at a time. I heat up one mold on top of the pot and the other on a hot plate. Good Luck

I used to do 2 moulds at a time but I have developed an air blower that alllow me to cast 1200 an hour more or less and do it with one mould. Easier on my hands and mind.
