Is Spencer wood available?
« on: May 07, 2006, 05:31:08 PM »
I am a complete pilgrim to Spencer's. Just got my first one (form Oregon Bill) and haven't even shot it yet.

Good news; an area gunshop has an original (rimfire) version w/22" barrel.  The bore is in good shape and it's mechanically solid.  Bad news is Great-grandpa Bubba got ahold of it. Among other things the buttstock has a patchbox inletted into it with some crude engraving on it. Looks like maybe a patchbox from a Sharps (?) with some dumb engraving on it. Plus it's missing the front barrel band.

Suggestions on how to get it back to some degree of "original" would be appreciated, (and/or whereabouts of a buttstock).

Norman,

You might want to go to the link below and check out their on-line catalog.  On page 42,43, & 44, of their catalog, SS Firearms show their Spencer parts, which may be of some help to you.  They show a buttstock for the Spencer Carbine and rifle, as well as the forend folr each firearm.

IMO,  Leave the patch box on, especially if it is an original Sharps item.  Polish out the engraving or just leave it.  That makes your carbine unique in my mind.  As long as the magazine tube in not affected then there should be no problem.

The front barrel ring can be bought through Dixie Gun Works. Info phone # 731-885-0700.  Order phone # 800-238-6785.   They show parts for both rifles and carbines in the 2005 catalog page 163. Rings shown.  Note:  the ring for the carbine is not listed under the Spencer.  But look at page 160 and 161, Sharps parts.  The rifle rings for both Spencer and Sharps have the same numbers.  In the Sharps section they do list a carbine front ring part # VP0335.  Call them, it may work on the Spencer.  Spencers are know to share Sharps parts.

Hope this helps.
