Ever shoot heavy Blackpowder loads in your Blackhawk?
« on: January 04, 2010, 09:35:35 PM »
Since the Blackhawk is a tough sixgun, do some of you dabble in hand loading black powder loads that would be equal to the firepower of an 1847 Colt Walker?
A work in progress.

Well, dunno how equal they would be, but I have sent many a projectile down the tube of my SBH 44 Magnum over the years with no ill effects - case stuffed to the hilt with Goex FFFG under a 240 grain slug....

My SBH was in 44mag, so with a 240gr bullet I could only get 32gr of Holy Black in the case.
It wasn't a heavy load by any means, the gun was not stressed at all!

Used to have some fun with members of the public on open range days. Our range was indoors and somewhat gloomy, so when I used to demo the "44magnum-the most powerful handgun load in the world!" I used to load one that had 21gr of Unique behind a 240gr semi-wad.
The incandescent ball of fire that rolled down the range caused strong men to go weak at the knees and pretty ladies to swoon!!!

Yeeehaw!!!

I do recall shooting some 240 GC bullets over 20.0gr. 2400 (I didn't load them) - seems to me they lit up the front sights pretty good too, but that's getting off topic ......

RTR:

;D  Sure do!  A case fulla FFFg in my .44 mag K-Bisley Vaqueros (OM) and the same in my .44mag K-Super Blackhawks.  I've used  AAP, Pyrodex, Goex, etc.  For bullets I load 205 gr RNFP WWA cast bullets.

Worked for me just fine.  I never chronographed 'em.  But I reckon they were 1000 FPS?
