.45-70 1873 Sharps

We will be getting our 1873 model Sharps soon. Right now I am looking into brass and BP loads for the rifle.
Outside of reloading for my .30-.30 Marlin and my .45 LC OM Vaqueros I have no experance in reloading.

What I'm trying to find out is What size/type of primer is used in reloading the .45-70 cartridge?

Have you invested in a good reloading manual yet?  If so then follow the recommendations for the powder that you have chosen to use.


45-70 uses a large rifle primer.

     I load all 3 of those calibers , but with smokeless .

     I read that with BP , you load almost a case full of BP , leaving just enough space that when you seat and crimp the bullet , you end up with a compressed load .  I think that is the short version .

Cyrille;  drop down to BROW..At one time the Federal 215 was the thing, then the WW LRM.  Now I hear its a different thing.

As I said, go to B.R.O.W. and tap into their expertise.

Oh!  One thing.  That is change one thing at a time to find the formula that works for you, and your rifle.

the sharps seems to be a popular rifle. not as much as the lever action winchester but still. i'm just kinda amazed that there are so few reloading supplies for that kind of ammo.

the ammo is expensive from what i found on google shopping.

If you are looking for loaded ammo, you might find your choices a bit limited.  If you are, then search for "Cowboy loads" for the Sharps, and similar 19th Century styles.

Most of us reload, and there are plenty of supplies.  Generally they are regular stock items available at the normal basic prices for most reloading supplies.

The best smokeless powder for duplicating black powder ballistics is 5744.
 The best powder in the 45-70 is generally one version or another of 2f black powder.
 Large rifle primers work well, altho some excellent accuracy with blackpowder loads can be had with large pistol primers.

I use 2 F and lg. rifle primers in either a Remington/Peters brass case or Starline Nickle I find very litte diffrence between the two.

I get real good accuracy from both regular winchester and remington nickle cases with grease groove bullets.
 Have dove off into the paper patch world and there remington brass cases and cci large pistol primers are working extremely well.
