Rolling Block: Pedersoli and Remington #5 receiver question
« on: October 08, 2009, 05:16:44 AM »
 Howdy all!

New guy here with a new guy question:

Will all or any parts for the Remington #5 and the Pedersoli rifles interchange?

The reason I ask this is I have a Remington RB #5 that I decided to start working on again. It was rebarreled (full octagon) a long time ago, and even though I shot it quit a bit when first complete, I'm shamed to say it hasn't seen much use othere than cleaning for quit a while.

It's time to finish my project and start shooting again. In the process of searching for parts, I have found some wood (stock and forend) that I like, but it's for a Pedersoli RB not the Remington. The forend is for the octagonal bbl like mine, but I was wondering will it fit where the forend joins the receiver?

How about the stocks? Interchangable or a NO/GO?

Or any other parts I might come across.

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but other than the trigger guard on the Pedersoli, the receivers look the same.

Any help before I decided to spend on something that won't work would be apriciated.

Thank you and glad I found this site.  Looks like the place to keep me motivated ;)

I have a Pedersoli .45-70, but I can't tell you whether you can interchange parts.  If you check out this forum and site you might have a better chance at an answer:
http://www.bpcr.net/index-a.htm

Also, the person who might know is Dick Trenk. He's Pedersoli's man in America and he knows more about those guns than just about anyone.  He used to hang out on a MSN BPCR forum, but that's defunct. If you ask around you can probably find Dick without too much trouble.

Good hunting!  ;)

Dick is an acquaintance of mine, and at this point in time, Dick is very, very ill and may or may not answer your
email. You can try emailing, but if he doesn't answer, please don't take it personnal. Dick is going through
chemo right now, he has a particularly nasty kind of leukemia. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

 Thank you Sir.

This is not as important as Mr Trenk's health.  I will pray for him and his family.

 The gun can wait.

I'm very sorry to hear this about Dick.  He's always been extremely helpful, friendly and informative when people like me have sought his advice.  I'll put up prayers for his recovery.

PRJ - Dave Higginbotham at Lone Star Rifle might be able to answer that question for you. My first, knee-jerk answer would be probably not much, if any, interchangeability. My opinion, though costs you nothing, and is worth every penny . . .

I should have expanded a little bit on Pedersoli parts. I would not expect the metal parts to be
interchangeable. About 4 years ago I had a Ped Roller and asked Dave at Lonestar if he would put a
set of double set triggers in and he said that the parts weren't the same and that he did not work on
them.

Is the stock set local to you or off the web. An important measurement is the length and width of the
tangs. If the reciever you have has wider and longer tangs, it is easier to take wood out, than if the
tangs are smaller than the cutout. So if you ask the people you are dealing with, give them the
dimensions from your rifle.

Also of importance is whether your barrel is tapered or not, and the taper of the Pedersoli barrels.
I actually had a couple Ped rollers. The Long Range one with half octagon and half round and one
with a full octagon barrel. The half round had the octagon part having no taper, the sides were
parallel, so once again its the measurements that count and which Pedersoli roller the forearm is
for.

does make roller stocks and others, George Petersen above will tell you if his stocks will fit your action

has parts and some stocks

 Thank you drcook.

My barrel is a straight octagon (no taper). Plus it's 1.25 land to land and from what I have seen search around on the web, Pedersoli's octagon barrels are probably 1.00". Since a few of you have the Pedersoli, maybe you could shed some light on this.

Might be better just to pay a little extra and get something that we know will fit, or can make one to my actual demensions.

Oh' and to answer your question, it is off the internet where I found the wood, so unless I know for sure, probably better off waiting for the right stuff.

I sent Dave at Lonestar an email, see what he has to say before I go further.

Thanks for everyone's help.

PRJ - I went back and re-read your original post. I completely disregarded that you were mostly asking about the wood - buttstock and forearm. Those parts from a Pedersoli may well fit with a little judicious rework/tweaking. I ordered wood for my roller from George at Treebone. He says they are 90% inlet, but (at least in my case) that was generous. I did my project about 13 years ago and it was based on an original #1 action. I think it turned out well and have been happy with it.

Unless you buy a 'take off" stock set on gunbroker or someplace like that, expect quite a little bit of fitting.  I;m doing a #5 roller just now, using treebone carving wood.  Nice quality, but yes, needs fitting and mucho sanding.
