Answering the brush question. Brush is to remove copper and lead fouling. At cowboy speeds, with a good bullet lube there is no leading and of course no copper allowed.
Only time you might need it is if you shoot smokeless lube with real black. Nasty hard mess.

I've found out a lot of times leading problems are more an alloy problem with even Nitro loads.  Lower pressures need softer bullets esp. in revolvers.

Worst leading problem I ever had in one involved some wad cutters made of pure lino and being running maybe 650 fps.  Same bullet, same gun, same load with 22 backstop lead and a tiny bit of tin added shoots clean.

Lots of information on it out there if anyone wants the exact whys of it. ;)

Also bullets slightly undersize cause a lot of leading.

Of course with revolvers there are lots of gun problems on dimensions that can cause it.

BTW if I get lead in a barrel, Nitro or Black, I get all the powder fouling out of the barrel and start on the lead with a jag an 0000 stell wool.  Now I've had some folks throw their hands up in horror, but I found out that this is what of the Shutzen crowd do ever with original barrels from the likes of Pope and such.  BTW the 0000 won't hurt our barrel, doupt even a coarser grade would.  Truth is the stuff if one tested it, is most likely softer than the Phosphour (sp) Bronze bushes talked about ealier in the thread.

Testamonial...this may save some time an expendable materials such as lube, milk and patches.
I switched to the windshield (windscreen fer PUK) fluid.  Wet patch (with the fluid), dry patch an no more than that.  Gun has sat fer a month.  Inpected the barrel yesterday an it's as clean as can be.  No sign of oxidation whatsoever.  The gun has not been stored in a case, it lives on an old tee shirt on my night stand.
I'll keep an eye on it until I get to chute er again.

I am in the moose milk camp.  I keep a spray bottle full at the range and half-way thru (or when we break for lunch) I spritz the barrel(s) on double and rifle (1866) and pull the bore snake thru a couple times...I do that again before I pack up.  On my pistols, I just spray them down with balistol lightly and wipe them off after I eat...I leave it on for the ride home.

Once I get home, I fill the sink with hot soapy water, pull the grips off my pistols and dump them in.  I then clean the double and rifle with moose milk, then straight Ballistol and wipe them down.  By then the hot water will have done what it's going to do and I dbreak-down the pistols, run a brush through the barrel and chambers, run a washcloth over them, rinse with the hottest water I can and dry.  While the metal is still hot, I coat with Ballistol and reassemble...

For my brass, I have a jug with about 3/4 gallon of water and about a quarter cup Simple Green.  After each stage, I dump the brass in and give it a shake.  At home, after I get through with the pistols, I dump the brass in the used hot water and swish them around, then dump on some paper towles to dry...from there into the vibration cleaner and they are good to go...

If only getting the black marks off my hat from ejected rifle empties was as easy!
