Custom 1874 Sharps
« on: November 23, 2007, 01:27:50 PM »
Here are some photos of my finished 1874 Sharps that I did some custom work on.  I Gemmerized the front end and added a  Schuetzen buttplate to the Hawken shaped butt stock.  I also made a cheek rest to bring up my eye to the Malcolm short scope on it.  It is a very comfortable rifle and with the cheek rest it comes to the eye and sights in very fast.  The Sharps is a Pedretti Hartford in 45 LC.  A tack driver.

A very nice looking rifle, but I would also wonder why such a low caliber in such a big rifle.  Seems like "underkill" to me.

Have you ever read the specs on a 45LC slug coming out of a 30 inch barrel?  It's a sweet, gong bangin' at a 100 yards, shooter. I can't see beyond that.
Nuff said.

Have to say, with so many folks idea of Long Range being 100-200 Yards it would serve fine and would kill any piece of paper, ring any gong and do fine on anything deer sized or smaller. ;)

Actually I was looking for some comments on my gun work, not what caliber of gun I did the work on.
Fred Bear once told me that If I could hit a pie plate at 25 yards with an arrow I could bring down a deer.  Seems to me a 45LC slug should be able to do that good.
Anyway, thanks for the comments.

I love the job you did.  Great workmanship.  I also  keep .45 Colt as my favorite caliber.  I just had that jump out and hit me and couldn't understand it...still don't, but it's your gun and you did a masterful job on converting it.

I appreciate all your comments.  Some of you will remember I built a Gemmer trapdoor Hawken in 45/70 a while back.  Beautiful shooter but kicks quite a bit.  I've always loved the Sharps and when I had the chance to get one in 45 LC I juped on it.  I can shoot this rifle all day long and so can my wife.
Thanks again for your comments

Outstanding job!
Just curious, but did you make the carrying rack as well? if so, do you sell them and what would be the cost?
Best regards and good shooting!

Much obliged Gabe.  I just drew up some patterns and cut them out of some oak planks I had laying around.  Not hard to make.  Just takes a little time and some work with a scroll saw and router.  I should have made it for more guns cause I got more guns. Heh, Heh

Actually Seth I didn't change the barrel.  It was 45LC when i bought the Sharps.  My wife loves to shoot it and I must say it doesn't kill my shoulder after a days shoot  Nuff said.

Howdy Triggersmith  ;D

Will I gotta say I think you did a beautiful job on the gun , rack and cheek piece, 45 long Colt is my favorite caliber too, whats nice about your gun , is like you said you can shoot it all day, and go home with out your shoulder pounding from pain , I've had shoulder surgery, I  would really appreciate a gun like this , never had a Sharps , but sure would like one some day , and as long as your not hunting Gris out to 200 yards  with this gun ,who cares,
my understanding is this gun is for SASS AND CASS events anyway, if you wanted the gun for big game hunting , you probably would have chosen a 45-70, but then you wouldn't be having as much fun as I'm sure your having with this gun. ::) 8) not this gun wouldn't be a good hunting rifle, I wouldn't want to come up against it... ??? And I love a tack driver  8)

Much obliged Ten Wolves.  I use my Gemmer 45/70 Hawken for Griz type stuff, Such as really big targets at 200 yards. Something I can see don't ya know.  That iron will take the wrinkles out of your shirt at the shoulder.

I totally understand your caliber reasoning!

You did absolutely BEAUTIFUL work!

What Del said about typical "long range" - CAS style, is right on the money!

VERY nice!

Wandered in here while posting something else.

Great job Triggersmith and great creativity.

For all there is a smaller framed Sharps on the market now. I think they are imported by Charles Daly. It is chambered in the pistol calibers and the .30-30 and .38/55 I believe.
