Want your thought???
« on: January 21, 2008, 06:24:31 PM »
A couple of months ago I bought a pair of Uberti 1873 Cattleman, they were a bargin, they shoot like a million dollars. Action job, and springs are so sweet. There are 2 things that I don't like about them, is the matte black finish and I like the Ivory or pearlized or white grips, and it has not to bad of looking wood grips on it now. I am going to shoot these guns, I love them!!

So what do you think about taking the wood grips off, and putting on one of the grips that I have listed above. Will it make the guns, more eye appealing?

I know the grips won't make the guns shoot any better, but I just like a little contrast. Jump in there and tell me what you think!

I will be great full for any and all advice.

You can't get off the shelf grips, your going to have to fit them to your guns.  As far as adding style points, heck yeah!!!!

So if I buy a pair of grips from Tomestone Grips I think they are white or aged Ivovy, they would make the gun lookk better?
Thanks

You should check out Gripmaker's grips.  Real nice and many patterns to choose from.  I am a very satisfies customer!  NO, I don't get a kick back. :( ;) ;D  Larry is a great fellow to deal with!

Ace:

In my opinion, grips are a very personal thing. It's a combination of looks and feel that makes some guys choose one kind and  other fellas choose another. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder in these matters. And it's all about personal preference and sense of aesthetic. If the ivory or pearl grips are attractive in your eyes and the contrast against the matte finish is appealing...go for it.

I'd guess some folks will tell you they'd look great and others might say they were just so-so. It's all opinion.

Kinda like one fella tryin' to tell you what kind of gal ought to appeal to you (in his opinion). Don't think that'd go over too well. So my advice is to make yourself happy.

Now. Most all after market grips will require some final fitting by the pistol owner -- unless you choose a company who will fit them for you (for a handsome fee, of course). Usually they don't require much but I've never had a set that didn't require a little. If you have some basic skills, some simple hand tools and a healthy helping of patience, you can do this work your self.

Half the fun is finding that perfect combination that suits your taste and fitting them babies yourself. Just my opinion, of course.

Ace , Irish Dave couldn't have said it better, I have to agree, it's what makes you happy, what looks good to you, so do your thing and be happy.. :o ;D the miner fitting shouldn't be a problem at all.

Dr. Bob,
I know Lee (Grip Maker) emailed him last night. Irish dave, I love Nickle plated S.A. , I have been in the process of building 2 old Junk Hawes 45 LC that I bought in a box, "with a BUNCH of parts not there" I am a tinkering FOOL. I hate the Black matte finish!!! but those guns shoot so SWEAT I cannot get rid of them, so I wished I see a pick of one of those guns with the white or pearl grips, so I couls see before I buy! If it would just warm up for a day or 2, I would slip out to the shop and cut me out a pair and paint them white, and then spray white pearl over them and put them on. Got this Bad back, and I havn't been out of the house a dozen times or so since x-mas. When I was in good health i made a lot of grips and gun stocks, but not now!!

Thanks for all the input
Ace
I must be getting dumber every day!! For  30 years I had a Photography Studio that i ran on a part time bases. I shoot a pic of that gun, i will go in to Abobe Photoshop and paint white grips on it. It won't be like the real deal, but it might help.

Ace:

Sounds like a plan. The Photoshop'd pix may give you a better idea of how it might look.

By the way, if thine "matte finish" offends thee, pluck it out ...so to speak. There are ways to remove the matte finish, though I've never done it myself. I've read of several pards who have removed it and then ended up having a kind of "antiqued" finish on their pistol. I can't advise you on this, but I'm sure others can.

Keep in mind, I'm not necessarily recommending this, just saying that if it really bothers you ("I hate the Black matte finish!!! ") there are alternatives.

Ace, here is a long discussion on CasCity about antiqueing guns:

http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,5505.0.html

The first post has a link to Longshot Logan's (R.I.P.) page on antiqueing, plus there are a number of other posts giving other methods.  And of course there are a couple of posts from people who will say that you shouldn't antique your gun if you are supposed to be a cowboy back in the day when your gun wasn't an antique yet.  Those folks always come out of the woodwork when people get to talking about antiqueing guns  ::)

I know a pard who strips the finish off all his guns and then polishes them with flitz until they look like they were nickled.

By the way, if your Uberti guns have the matte finish, I'm guessing they may also have the brass gripframe?  If so, the contour may be a bit different than the regular Uberti SAA grips, so you should mention this or make a tracing of the gripframe when ordering grips since it might make a difference on which ones they send.

Good luck.

Been there done that!  ;D I got some fake ivory grips on fleabay for the Cattleman looked good for a while but like others have said you have to fit them yourself (sanding polishing them and sometimes re-gluing  :'( ) looked kewl for a while but I decided to strip the old finish off the grips and refinish them, I like them much better now.  ;D  You can see the grips in my avatar.

Abilene, I realy don't want to do the antiqueing to these, but I quess I will get use to the Matte Black,
I have been working on a Old pair of Hawes Western Marshall's, they had no blue left on them, after several hours of sanding and polishing they look like nickle, and I am going to leave them that away. But I am great full for the advice.

Floyd, You are right, brass rear frames, and I plan on polishing them up someday. Since there is no screw that runs threw the grips, how do you get them off? If I pm you my email add. could you send me a close up pic of your grips?
Also I am great full for all the help.

It is not hard at all.  :) You take off the 2 screws on the top by the hammer and the one on the base and tat is it. :o Then remove the wooden piece strip lightly sand, maybe a little stain (I used the waterbased so I could water it down a little) After it is all done and dry I used tru oil (I think that is what it is called) and rubbed it in over and over and over until I got the finish I liked. Great thing to do when you have down time. ;D

How do Ace

Ace pard you're all over the place, it's hard to keep up with you, just kid-en, to get the grips of , their are two screws on top of the back strap , just at the bottom of the hammer , you need to remove these , then their is one screw on the bottom of that back strap ,on the butt of the grip, remove it , now just pull the back strap and grip , backwards from the gun, be carefull not to lose the hand spring , on the frame , if your gun has one , it's just above the left back strap screw you just removed, and thats it, unless you want to take the triger guard off too , which is easy , just take the remaining three screws off the bottom , and your good to go , you can clean and polish , degrese, and reoil while you have the gun apart. there is no need to take the gun apart any further , unless your going to replace some parts, and make sure you USE THE RIGHT SCREW DRIVER, more dudes MESS UP their guns by not using the right driver. heres a picture of my old Dakota 45 colt.
