Wedgie Thingy - What the heck is it??

I realize that this is a USFA group, but I'm betting that someone here knows what this is.  This is from an Uberti Cattleman (though it is stamped Regulator).  Any thoughts?  I've geard some theories, but nothing compelling.

It's a safety device.  Drops down to contact the frame so the pin can't hit the primer.  When it's fully cocked the wege rises up so it will clear the frame and fire if the trigger is pulled.

Watch when you cock the gun slowly and you'll see what happens.
