Pedersoli question
« on: April 25, 2007, 11:31:29 AM »
Is there any difference between the Billy Dixon and Quigley guns other than the patchbox?

Yep,
The best way to get the definitive answer is to go to the Pedersoli website at: www.davide-pedersoli.com then click on the 'product' icon and scroll til you find them. I have a Billy Dixon in 45-70, bought it about 5, maybe 6 years ago direct from Flintlocks, Etc., good people to deal with as they are one of Pedersoli's biggest dealers in the states. Richard Beauchamp and his wife Rose went back to the stockroom and opened all the boxes and got usa two with the purtiest wood you have ever seen, and sequentially-numbered to boot! They are both good shooters but the tang sites that come with the rifles are the basic Pedersoli sights, the ladder and front blade are spot-on if you are shooting 100-300 yds, but I shoot farther so, or at least try to, so replaced them with a set of Parts Unknown Mega Soule and a Lyman 17A Front Globe.
The basic differences are in stock drop/style, pewter nosecap, etc., and the patchbox of course. The bbl length, caliber, etc., all play into it as you well know. Billy shot a 'Big 50' as we have read many times, but was also comfortable with all the other Big Bore calibers, large and small. Read recently (your post?) that he lost his 'Big Fifty' crossing a creek, it evidently fell out of the supply/hide wagon on his way to Adobe Walls. Wouldn't it be a hoot if one of us Big Bore Buffs could do a dig and locate it? Boy Howdy, would that be a bunch of style points!
Best regards and good researching!

Okay, with that in mind, can I get a Quigley without that stupid patchbox and without a Hartford collar, with an uncheckered stock, and with a pewter nose cap?

Can I get it without going to the high-ticket makers and ordering a custom rifle?  If I have to lay out that kind of money, I'll go with a Ballard.

F.R.,
Just for the sake of discussion only...
If you want a Sharps rifle but without the treatments/configurations that make it a 'Quigley', you might want to take a look at the Pedersoli LL 780 and the S 774 models, they might have what you are looking for in a Pedersoli Sharps. JMHO, but the Pedersoli company probably paid dearly for the marketing rights to name a style of rifle after the movie character and then packaged it in the closest configuration possible that would be marketable in quantity. If you wanted a rifle exactly like that used in the movie, the caliber would be larger and more expensive to load, as well as the overall styling being a bit different, not sure but a calculated guess on my part. Other Sharps lovers and movie buffs will no doubt chime in with more definitive info and data.
Just curious, but why would you want a 'Quigley' without the patchbox, etc., it wouldn't be a 'Quigley' then, it would just be another Sharps without a patchbox, etc. Are you looking for a Sharps in the 'original' caliber as in the movie? Pedersoli offers the 45-110 and 45-120 in some models, other companies follow their lead but the Pedersoli 'Quigley' in 45-70 or 45-110 seems to be the standard.
Best regards and good looking!

D.D.,
Cabela's and Dixie Gun Works are probably your closest big distributors, but you might want to put a feeler 'Wanted' on some of the BPCR forums when you know what model you are interested in. Check out www.bpcr.net, they have a reliable forum for buying and selling.
Best regards and good shooting!

Word of advice if you are looking for a Sharps type of rifle. Consider what you REALLY want. I have a Pedersoli bought from Dixie when they first came out, it is a very nice rifle that shoots well - but it is not a Shiloh and the Shiloh IS that much better of a gun. Sooooo........., now I own two Shilohs (they are addictive) and a nice Pedersoli. Buy what you want the first time, and you may only have to buy once. Voice of experience speaking.

The Pedersoli I purchased from Dixie is a nice shooting rifle. Its my go anywhere rifle. Not gonna cry when it gets a scratch on it.
Now the Shiloh sharps I have been waitin on the last 16 months, well thats gonna be my Sunday go to meetin rifle. All the bells an whistles.
