In answer to your question, "Are the USAF revolvers good enough out of the box for CAS shooting?" - short answer is yes. Internal finishing on the USFA guns is excellent. You might, however, wish to change out the main spring and the trigger/bolt spring. I recommend these from Brownells:
Wolff reduced power mainspring (hammer) part # 969-322-800 $15.00
Heinie wire trigger/bolt spring - part # 394-630-000 $6.75
I use these springs in all of my USFA guns and they give them the feel of a professional action job - all for less than $22.00.
I wouldn't bother with those consecutive numbers either. Other than the warm, fuzzy feeling they might give you, they really aren't worth that much.
