Bullet size question
« on: November 04, 2006, 03:37:20 PM »
This is the first time I have had reloads done, I gathered my old brass and obtained some .454 bullets and having a pard do the reloads.  Then the question came up about the size,  eek!  I don't know buffalo chips but now I wonder about using .454 bullets in my '58 Piettas, no loss because if I can't I can always use them for rifle...  I should have said, I am using the R&D conversion cylinders in .45

Be please with information.

Thanks Coop

You might want to SLUG your barrel so you can get the accurate bore size. From what I've found out, Pietta is boring their pistols in smaller diameters then Uberti, Colt, or anyone else.

The person reloading the ammo for you should know about SLUGGING a barrel, and checking the size with a good accurate pair of Calipers. The slugs you shoot should be about a thousanth to two thousandths larger then the groves in your bore. Anything less, and your just bouncing lead down your barrel !!!

BTW,, you're also going to find out that the chambers in your cylinder are smaller then your bore diameter. So don't be surprised when you learn that your ammo isn't matching the grove of your bore. Also, as alittle side note, soft lead causes more foweling in your barrel then does harder lead.

Thanks Waya,   I will have to ask my pard to do that for me.....Like I said I don't know Buffalo Chips.....I shoot the pistols, and keep them real clean and that is about all I know about them other than I like the feel in my paw.

But at least I will have some heavy .45s to send out my long gun.  No loss if I can't use in the pistol.   Then next go round I will know a weeee bit more than I do this time.  Thanks Again Coop

The throat diameter of your cylinder is more important.  It is easy to check yourself with a micrometer, or even a dial caliper.  Push a slug, large enough to require a bit of force, through the throat from the chamber end. and measure the result.

The .454 bullet you acquired are not a waste.  If they chamber when loaded properly they will be safe to shoot with reasonable loads.  If you think, after trying your options, that you really need .452 or .451 bullets, they can be resized.
