Purple Remmies!
« on: August 24, 2006, 08:59:40 PM »
I will never live this down!

I have been wanting to 'brown' my Remmies for quite some while. I got some Birchwood Casey Plum Brown and followed the instructions. (After stripping the blue with white vinegar and polishing the metal.)

It all went well except for one thing.

They are BRIGHT Purple!

No.. i havent any pics.. i cant bring myself to do it.

I now need shares in steel wool!!

(I may post pics after I have knocked back the colour a little)

Well it is PLUM brown.  Have you tried adding more coats, I've always used about 8 -12 coats on the guns I've done with it.  May as well try that first if you're going to take it down again anyway.
Also heat the parts in an oven at about 200 degrees before you wipe on the brown.

I used at least four coats on my ruger and chicom shotgun, and they look gawd awful at first, but the last coat ya card it off some, oil the bejeepers out of it (to stop the rust process), let it set in a warm dry place a while (on top the fridge is good) and oddly, after several weeks of setting and several uses and normal cleaning and oiling, they git, well, brown.  Aftewr a while ya git thin (or bald) spots and it looks like a right proper old gun.

I've had folks do a double take on the vaquero, thinkin' it was a genuwine old Colt.

I actually have a remmie that has a dark purple barrel. I think it came from the factory that way. It was made by a company called Ricambi, which, for all I know, was bought by Berreta.

My Walkers were fired blue and a vinegar solution turned them purple.  Ended up antiquing them to avoid embarrestment.
