I had pretty much given up on the whole idea. Wasn't even looking anymore, but you renewed my interest. I've got 200 coming. I'm sure I will be wanting more, but 200 is enough to get me started. Now all I need is for Santa to bring me something to shoot them in.

You can sign up with Starline to get notifications when the brass you are looking for is available.  I think the 44-40 has come available several times in the past year, but lasts less than a day.  By the time you see someone on a forum mention it, it is often too late.

Well, they had orders available for quite some time, so hopefully they are making a big batch and some of that is going to distributors who will have it available shortly.  I didn't order any as I had just bought some NOS winchester brass (paid more for it, too, but that's okay).

   One really nice thing about Starline 44-40 brass??  It makes really superb 45 Colt cartridges that seal rifle chambers really really well.

I've heard of a few people doing this which seems like a good way to make 45 colt more black powder friendly in a rifle. What I never have understood is if you are going to buy 44-40 brass, why not just shoot 44-40 which is even better?

I think a lot of people already had a 45 Colt rifle before they decided to try black powder.  Or else they knew they wanted to shoot BP when they bought it but were unaware of the action fouling issues.

I shot a lot of 45 Colt BP in a '92 when it was my only rifle, but now that I have multiple calibers, my .45 '73 is strictly smokeless.  I shot BP in it a single time, using 45 Schofield rounds (because it is a trapper and it is easier to load them) fully loaded with a 250 gr "Desperado Bullet Co." bullets with their "BP friendly" lube.  Well, it was pretty horrible both in the bore and the action, so I'm sticking to the .38, 44-40, and 32-20 for BP.  I considered fireforming some 44-40's to .45 but not for long as there is no need.

'Cause I already gotz FIVE 45s.  Had to solve the Blow-By problem with what I have Dontcha No
