1860 army or 1872 open top
« on: March 24, 2009, 09:27:35 PM »
For those that have used both or for those that just have strong feelings about these revolvers, which do you feel is better...1860 Army Conversion or the 1872 Open Top? Which one shoots better? feels better in hand? balances better? thanks for the advice, trying to decide which revolver to get and just wanting some opinions

In essence - they're the same weapon.

Only 'you' can decide which has the balance you find most comfortable...

Try them both to see which fits your hand and eye.

Good Luck!

That's about the best answer I figgure you'll get.  Are you looking for a 45 or 38?

The Opentop is available with a Navy grip, if you like that better.  With the Army grip, the two guns would feel the same.  The Opentop barrel is 7-1/2 inches long, the Army is 8 inches long.  The rear sight is on the hammer on the Army, and on the barrel on the Opentop.

I can never find any of these guns in person where I'm located (Central Kentucky). What little I've found are wrong barrel lengths or wrong caliber. Same goes with a Russian Schofield. I'd like to actually handle and look at the gun before I dish  out the money for it.

A man with a banjo and a man with a gun... both are equally dangerous.

I have one of each. Both in 45 Schofield with army grips. Barrels are 7 1/2" & 8" . If I had to make a choice I would lean towards the 1860 with the 8" barrel as it puts me half an inch closer to my target HAW!  Seriously I think they're both great.

I have to agree with Nine Toe. I shoot both and like them both. Mine are also in Army grip configuration. If I could only take one to the range, I'd opt for the conversion over the '72, but that may be because my conversion is in 44 Spcl, and that shoots a lot milder than the '72, which is in 45 Colt caliber. But then lightening up the 45 Colt isn't that hard either.

I like the looks of the conversion guns, but I DO like the rear sight on the '72 OT better..................... that should make things about clear as mud  ;D

You would be surprised at the accuracy you can get from a hammer sight.  I sure was.  Not as sloppy as you'd think.

Well, my 1860 Army's and R-M's have a LOT more sight radius than any of the OT  ;)
Theoretically, this minimizes aiming error, but doesn't make the pistol more or less accurate (JMHO).

Your right Leo, I find that both sights preform quite well although I did square off the "V" shape of both sights to "U" shape with a very fine file.

That helps a ton with a bead front sight.  I did the same.

I have a pair of 72 open tops with 4 3/4" barrels and I love them, mine are point an shoot! My only problem is shooting the open tops, and then going to my Cattleman, because I have to aim with the cattleman. As far as the 1860's i have 3 (non converted) and I have not popped a cap in any of them!

Howdy
Yesterday I shot a Cimarron 1872 OTC it was a tack driver . This was my first time shooting a 44 colt .
I sat a target at 15 yards and was thumping it every time . I backed up to 20 yards and was still thumping it .
I only shot 30 rounds through it yesterday . Plan on shooting more this coming week  . The sights were great
which I really didn't expect .

Rowdy, I have a '71-72 Open Top that is as accurate a handgun as I've ever owned. It is nothing short of amazing in accuracy.

I shoot .44colts too. Nice easy round to load and is historical proper.

Got a chance to shoot some rounds through my 45 OT this past weekend. I don't know what's considered great accuracy, but we were clanging the targets 6 out of 6 shots at 10 yards with no problems once we found the right sight picture to use. It shot a little high at that range, but only a matter of a couple/few inches.

I agree with Leo about the hammer sight.  And there's a longer sight radius with the hammer rear sight, handy for some older eyes.

The tapered front sight was the more significant problem for me, couldn't quickly find the top of it.  But that problem was eliminated by replacing that front sight with one that has parallel sides, serrated on the back side.
