Yup, there are times it would be nice to pull in and be someplace where everything is nice and dry, and everything can be taken apart and cleaned, unfortunately the place might be several hours or even days ride away..

Having mined underground in the desert out of a shack and now living in Florida where we killed a Rattler on our front stoop and a neighbor was savaged by a Bobcat walking her dog, and the violence here, I'd say . . .

Florida is far, far more dangerous and much, much harder on firearms.  Much.

Imagine finding that on your front stoop.

Or the cottonmouth I killed on the walkway into my office, or the ticks, meningitis laden mosquitoes . . .

The western wilderness has it hands down over Florida for safety, comfort, and less hazard to firearms--everything here rusts or detriorates.

Mean bob, funny you should mention rattlers. I killed one under the frontend of my pickup out in the hay field had 17 buttons. :o

Mtn lion killed a fawn deer about a 1/4 mile west of the house about a month ago. Neighbor kid was trying to find his dogs the other night he set them out when he crossed 6 sets of lion tracks, never have heard if he got the dogs back or not.
Haven't seen any wolf tracks up close to the barn yet with this fresh snow, but we killed 2 of them a couple years ago, that were laid up about 300 yds past the lot where we shut the cows into at night during calving...
Haven't seen the bobcats for awhile, not sure if the lions , or the wolves took them out..

Hayfields are great places for rattlers aren't they?  And barns . . .man . . .

Well, I live right down town.  Dad (dad in law) lives on edge of old town on a nice, spring fed lake.  Got a 12+ footer (Gator) that just will not take a trappers hook, has not for 3 years now.  Dogs go bye-bye all the time.  I'm waiting for a kid to disappear.

I was on a milling operation around a big cat, she had a den and cubs.  Got close enough to hear her warning cough.  If you've never heard it, it's cool.  Big cats don't bother me, nor do wolves.  They can all be hard on livestock and pets though.

The kitty that savaged the woman (and killed her pooch) was rabid--which is rampant here.  We have so many bugs, which beget things that eat bugs, which beget snakes, that the place is thick with vermin.  Take you out to where the Moccasins migrate sometime, let you see a few hundred poisonous vipers in an evening.  That will make you like Florida.

Skunks and bats are the biggest Rabies carriers here.

You can live  where you have to breath somebody elses air if you want to, and look at all the nearby roof tops etc..
I'll take this view and traffic over anything in Florida any time. ;)

Fellow Floridians,

Now, we all know just how suburban the arm chair living is here in this State.
We as a people, that actually live in this State, should know better than to try to fool any body.
My best,

;D Dusty, there's sure not much to be afraid of with those cats, they are pretty chicken when it comes to humans most of the time, but still when you're out doing the late night check in the calving pasture those big ol green eyeballs do get your attention. Those buggers come slipping in behind you when you're out calling coyotes can get your pulse rate checked in a hurry as well..

But back to the topic at hand.. Anybody that's spent time carrying a rifle on horseback knows how quick a new one can get antiqued, even in the best of conditions and care. ;)

Not a roof top in sight ...

...and big cats we call them Panthers and they are almost extinct.
Killing one gained the Perp , 30 days behind bars, 60 days of home confinement, , three years of probation, a $5,000 fine and another requirement he had to donate $5,000 to a wildlife-related charity, plus 200 hours of community service. He also was banned from hunting for three years. He had to forfeit his bow, arrows and tree stand and write a public apology that was published in State wide Newspapers.

Bet it's not near as far to the first town there as it is here Major. ;)

They have a quoata system on the cats here, once so many females in a given area have been killed then the seasons shut down. Have to have a license and call in every day before you hunt, just to see if the area is still open...
Of course if we catch one killing livestock then we can shoot.

Not at the moment, but wasn't to long ago that we hired extra help. Drought has really put the squish on things.

Just a lot of cow and horse flatulence .... ;>)

I'm out in the middle of nowhere on a lake. Unless I drive to the main road or pick up the mail, I can go for weeks and not see another human being other than the meter reader.  The JW's still find me though ....
