Finally after stalking this page for a while, I finally got my own 1866 carbine! Took 6 months and a universal m1 carbine, shoots pretty good, within 25 I can hit what i'm aiming at and shot a bird from 75 yards away. Kinda been blowing through my 45lc since i got it though.
it's just too much fun not too shoot!  ;D

Mind you that I am a native american and can own eagle feathers, so please don't bring up legal issues

And here's a picture of it next to my uberti horseman also in 45 lc

Congratulations!  They're great guns.  You'll enjoy it.  My '66 is the most natural pointing rifle/carbine that I own and has the smoothest action of all my toggle link guns.  Thanks also for the photos of the original.  No one here complains about a lot of good pictures!

   Greetings!

Congrats on your new acquisition! The '66 is a neat carbine, and balances well. I gave my
Uberti/EMF a "4th model" look by having the front sight attached to the barrel behind the mag
tube band. Eagle feathers are a nice touch.

Beautiful rifle, great photos.

Can anyone tell me what the ring on the left side of the receiver is for? I saw it on another vintage Winchester I handled yesterday.

Short answer " for use on horseback "

Congrats on the 1866--even though I am getting up there in age it is still on my shortlist! Being Native American have you ever been to the Rosebud Battlefield? Unlike LBH It is still prestine condition. I am sure there were a number of "66 rifles and carbines at this great victory for the Native Americans. It is a place of great beauty with few visitors.

Only other visitor there that day was a lady of Sioux/Cheyenne heritage exposing her children to their history. She pointed off into the hills and talked about the many firearms hidden there to keep them from being seized by the army. I believe that is as good a place as any since we have plenty in collections and museums. Just my opinion.

Congrats on your new yellowboy, I hope you enjoy it.

I see you are just getting started on wrapping the quills of your eagle feathers.

A lot of folks these days follow powow methods as seen on CrazyCrow and Prarie's Edge.
If you want to use a more traditional method and can't find an elder who can teach you, check out
http://www.nativetech.org/feather/wrap/fethwrap.html

While it costs more I like to use wool tradecloth rather than "felt" , and cotton or wool thread,
but I use artificial sinew on my imitation turkey and peahen feathers .

I myself am an "anglo mutt" but I am lucky to have spent some time up on the Rosebud amongst the People; and we have some great elders in the Pueblos & Zuni Reservations of New Mexico who are more than willing to pass along anything they can.

AWRIGHT!!  Brass Rifles ROCK!!

Now, go to VIT Gunparts and order their after-market ladle (Loading gate).  When you get the ladle, reinforce the little tab to prevent breaking.  You will also notice, the after-market ladle is much deeper as on the original sample example.

PS:  I'd also suggest you replace the Lever Side Springs (Slixsprings) and Main Spring ("The Smith Shop" in RI) while your at it.
