Thanks for the replys folks, gives me plenty to think about before I buy. The 61's are running about $220.00- $250.00 depending on where you buy. The 51's are running $148.00- $180.00 from what I've found so far.
I like dealing with Cabelas and have for years. They have a great no-hassel attitude when it comes to returning there stuff and they will replace it or give back your money and always with curtisey. Don't see that much anymore  :) Thanks again , Mike
Also if you have their credit card you earn Cabela's bucks.

After doing a little of the Google research on the 61 I found an artical where this hombra say's he uses .390 balls and gets great accuracy. I can't even find .390 balls! Have any of you tried balls this much over .375 in your 36's ? I know that you can get .380 but .390 seems like it may be a bit tight.

Mason, I don't even own a .36 yet but I'm hoping to have a 61 for Christmas via my wife ;D I had one many years ago but was to busy back then to mess with it, now that I have plenty of time and no money I wish I had it back :'(
Anyway, I do own several BP long guns that I built from scratch along with two Remington .44 that I've had for several years now and lovingly tunned to perfection. They shoot the .451 just fine and the .454 just fine also. I have heard some guys talk about how they use .457 in there Remingtons and there aint no way that will happen in either of mine without breaking the ram or my arm. To tell the truth I can't tell much if any difference in accuracy from the .451 to the .454. They both shoot more accurate than I'm cabable of.
I'll see If I can find that artical again on the .390 balls and get a link to it or copy and paste I will so you can see it.

A .375 ball will be plenty accurate.  I've used .380's in the past, and they are OK as long as they're pure lead, soft enough to shave the lead ring.  There are bullet molds made for .390 round ball, but they are just used in wierd caliber muzzel loading rifles.  I wouldn't bother for your pistol, .375's shoot great.

Here is the artical I was telling you about. Sure seems like it would be hard on the ram to me. A .390 is really a .40 calib. ball... I think, Mike

.44Caliberkid. I'm sure the .75 will be good enough for me but I have read more than once that some people say they can work loose when shooting because they just aren't tight enough.
I'm just trying to get all my cows in the corral before I place the Iron in the coals, so to speak ;D  I wont have my 61 untel Christmas and I just want everything ready to go and shoot. Mike

Remmie kid,
My '61 Navy has been shot so many times that the chambers are worn so I bought a .380 double cavity mold from LEE. The .375s will work but I have to press pretty hard to flatten them a little so they grip the walls of the chamber. A friend of mine has an old Lyman 36cal Remington Navy that will not take a .375 ball as it will develop "ball creep" (sounds venereal) and the cylinder will lock up upon firing. The loose balls migrate forward under recoil and jam against the outer edge of the barrel preventing the cylinder from turning. Fortunately you can usually reach around and press the ball back into the chamber with your finger to make it clear the barrel and finish its line up with the bore. So, if you aren't sure, a 380 ball will do fine. A 390 might be hard to seat but I've never tried.

I am using around 17 to 20 gr of 3F  Schotzen( spelling )  Powder and Tresco Nipps. No filler  on the 36 cal . Just powder boolit and lots of lube.

Nothing comes back and the shoot great groups.

Hope this helps

Mason

Thanks Mason! I've had the urge to get me one of those old charcoal burners, again. Use to shoot them a lot, years ago, but got lazy and went back to them new-fangled cartridge guns!  ;)

Hellgate, I found a place that sells .375 and .380 swaged. It looks like it may be a good idea for me to buy a box of each and shoot them for a while and just see what works best out of the 61 that I get. Thanks again for all the help and info pards.
