Looking for my C&B navies to do some shooting on the farm today, oved last year and am still trying to find stuff , but finally found the pistols. Discovered that after the last cowboy match I shot they got put away dirty and forgotten in the move.
Not a bit of rust on them, just as greasy and dirty as when I crammed them in their holsters 18 months ago. Loaded them up and shot 30 rounds with them with out a hitch...bet you couldn't get away with that with a substitute BP

Glad to hear it.

You already know it, but BP or the residues are not corrosive without moisture.  The residues are hygroscopic wherein lies the problem with BP and corrosion.

It sounds like you had enough lube in your chambers and bore  to keep the moisture sealed away from the steel and bound up the compounds created from firing so they couldn't attract moisture.  

Have you stripped them down?  You might want to check the innards to be sure you don't have any funky stuff in there.

You probably had as big of a chance of getting problems from the tanning compounds in the leather.  Sounds like you keep your gear oiled up just from your ball lube alone.

Hey fellas, I'm not down or out, just incredibly busy putting the new place together. I've had a hammer in my hand far more than a pistol the past two years. Uncle Joe came over to shoot some new loads, that's why I rooted around to find my navies. I'm pretty convinced it was the amount of lube splattered alll over the inside and out that saved the guns. The inside of my holsters are as greasy as the guns so no problem there. The cylinders spun freely and the revolvers functioned flawlessly. I popped some caps on them before I loaded them as a precaution, but probably didn't need to as I could see the nipples were clear. Sure was fun shooting them again!

Yep, it sounds like you slather it on.  I can't remember if you said you used lubed wads, or over the ball lubing.  I'm interested to find out what your salvation was.

I use a lubed   fiber wad from Circle Fly between powder and ball plus wonder lube over the ball or some kind of goo that comes in a tube from Dixie gun works. Or it's possible it may have been crisco over the ball too. I'm not too picky what lube is over the ball as long as there's a bunch of it. Always found the guns to function better with lots of lube spraying around.
 Still haven't cleaned them by the way, they're loaded and back in their holsters in my shop waiting for an opportune moment to  step out the door and kill some more tin cans.

Yeah...my "clean" match count was waay down this year. Would be great if I learned gunfighter...as I was seeing two of everything for a spell. A friend recently said "it's better being on the green side". - For the most part, I agree!! - obviously this means I'm feeling MUCH better
