1851 project gun
« on: July 22, 2009, 09:41:40 PM »
I've been working on a project gun this afternoon.  What it is is a Pietta .44 cal 1851 Navy Civilian with the silver plated backstrap and triggerguard, mated to an extra 1851 barrel i had laying around in my workshop.  i decided to take a gander at barrel shortening.  The barrel I shortened to 4 1/8", and i shortened the ramrod as well.  The dovetail for the lever catch was filed in by hand, as was the slit in the lever for the loading latch.   I still need to clean up, polish, defarb, and refinish the barrel, as well as install the front sight yet.  What do you all think of it so far?  Shoud i go as far as installing simulated ivory grips as well?  Maybe carved ones?

I've been itchin' to get me a pair of them .44 Navies with the silver gripframe but funds have been short here lately. :'(
Yeah, this list also includes:
1. Pietta 1851 Old Silver Navy .44cal
2. Uberti 1858 New Army .44cal
3. Uberti 1860 Army .44cal
4. Uberti 1861 Navy .36cal

Definately want the last one on the list!

Well, if you want one that bad, Cabelas has them on sale now, you might have to break out the charge card and hope the funds come in in the future!  Or, just sell a kidney and get your whole list.... ;)

Angel Eyes;  I'm in Reading, Berkshire,  right now.  Will we see you at Picketts Hill in September with that brace of Walkers?

Looks good Deadguy. How's the fit of that barrel? Chambers to bore and frame pins to barrel and wedge fit and all. Have to adjust any of that?
What about drilling the hole in the loading lever for the latch and spring? Any trouble doing that? Drilling a hole in the end of that skinny loading lever......centering it and all....pain in the arse?

Even though that is not the barrel that came with the gun from the factory, it still fits just fine.  As for drilling the holes in the loading lever, it wasn't anything that my drill press couldn't handle.

Front sight?   We don' need no stinking front sight!
Seriously though, very nice work.   Ivories would look pretty good with the silver.

I've been wondering about the silver backstrap.  Is it available on .36 cal 1851s?  I looked at a couple of the big retailers and only see it listed on the .44.  I would love to have an authentic 1851 with silver plated backtrap.

Cool little snubby. I am working on another one at the moment myself. I will post pics sometime this weekend.

I picked up one of those civilian models nickeled baskstrap jobs at Cabelas about a month ago, for 130 bucks or so. They are good guns, if you can get one.

But now I need to find an Army grip frame and grip, so I can make it match my other one. Or else go back to the Navy grip on my older one.
