After 3 months, I got out mith my 1866 Sharps
« on: February 06, 2009, 09:01:30 PM »
Howdy folks,
Three months ago I took a 1866 Sharps in on trade. And the weather and the back just kept me from getting out! Today was the day, Springfield slim sent me some 300 gr. big lube bullets to test! I am not a big fan of bullets that are as long as they wide!
I loaded them up powder puff loads 9grs of Unique with 1/4" of dacron on top of the powder. Had 30 mph cross winds, and I never made a ajustment, I put a 5 shot group in a 2" circle and the powder was just dump, don't scaled. The guy that traded it to me said it was a shooter, and he was telling the TRuth! I talked to Lee Shaver and he told me what to look for on my 74, and how to make it shoots, even if my Sharps ar cheapy I know that they can be made to shoot. lee has been winning a lot of shoots, with his IAB, but it is super Tuned!

1866 Sharps? Only a handful of original '66 Models were made and they were all 3 band rifle in .50 Rimfire.  ???

FoX, The only difference in my gun and the pic is I have the rounded fore arm, and my gun I think is between 5-10 years old!
I have some Old books, that list that there were a model change allmost every year from it's start 1884-1880, some only little minor changes, and some years then did nothing! Because when I traded for it a friend of mine ask me about my 63, and I told him that the book called it a 66?
Thats all I know, other than it is a good shooting rifle, and I am ready to start shooting it some more!

Thanks MD,
I realy need to up grade the sights, but i will need to shoot it a lot more before I do that! I been looking, and a set of sightes will cost me as much as I have in the gun. so I want to get my B.P. loads developed to a tee, and put a lot of lead down the range, before I spend some magor money on Sights!
There are a lot of folks out there that tell you that you are wasn't your money on a piece of junk gun like a IAB. but i have visited some with john boy over on the BPCR forum, and he has a H&R that is a super shooter.
So untill i can get out on the range and shoot, i am lost on what i will do.
Thanks
