If you look at history this gun had not met reserve in a prior auction that got up to $1825

opinions?

Opinions?

As to what?

It's a converted centerfire revolver and they're not that uncommon - though you see more Colts having been converted than anything else, probably due to the fact that there were always more available.

If S&W had done the job - S&W would've told the owner, had he bothered to ask, but it looks like the conversions done by Kings Gun Works' in the '40's.

I suppose I should have been a bit more explicit.

What is your opinion regarding what the seller is evidently willing to sell this gun for vs. it's actual value?
From the many unconcluded autions, $1825 failed to meet the reserve.  Maybe its worth substantially more and its just failed to sell due to the poor economy, maybe the owner is too proud.  I am ignorant and thus am seeking information.

Using that as your question - I'd say that the seller is positive he's got a true rarity, and has priced it against un-screwed-with Schofields.

What he has is a refinished, modified Schofield that's worth whatever one of those might bring - nothing more, and because it was turned into a .22 - maybe less.

Hard to say.

No matter what - the seller's positive he's got a prize, and he'll flog it on different auction sites and take it to gun shows in search of a sucker with more money than brains, who's thinking 'Maybe, just maybe...'

Guys like that see something similar sell somewhere - never factoring in the percentage of original finish or 'originality' in general - merely thinking that theirs is equal to it and should bring that price - or more, because 'they' have it.

I would say that the value depends on the reason you want it !

If you are a collector of .22 conversions it may have a higher value to you than to others. Especialy if you can determine who did the conversion.

If your desire is to have a "real" Schofield converted to .22 for shooting it could be worth somewere in the $2000 dollar range. If you factor in that a 10% Schofield is worth approxamatly $2250 and you start with an already modified Schofield (at what ever percentage) that has no real collector value (has had parts replaced) and then add in the cost of conversion and refinishing $2000 MAY be reasonable.

Ulltimatly you are the only one that can determine it's value to you.

Raven

RI Auction recently sold 2 different S&W models converted to .22 one was a typical #3, SA the other was a Russian model, sold to Japan (refinished, engraved and target sights added). The former sold for near $2700 and the latter for nearly $4000. I handled the engraved one and it was very nice (near new) as restored/modified condition and tight as a drum. Not my cup of tea, but they sold well.
