Anyone ever shoot the Single Six in .17 HMR?
« on: March 02, 2010, 08:54:29 PM »
I just wondered how well the ammo worked with shorter-than-rifle-length barrels.   ???

The 17hmr has an appeal over the 22mag in rifles only because of the accuracy the V-max bullet achieves compared to traditional 22mag rounds. However with the 22mag now offered in the v-max, I find the 17hmr not worth buying.

In a 17hmr handgun (even if it does come with a 17hmr cylinder which I forget if they did)
- The rounds are expensive
- The 22mag is still better on critters
- Even if you put a scope on it and want to shoot at 100 yards, the 22mag is now offered in a v-max washing out any advantage the 17hmr had.

To answer your question (finally)  ;D
I suspect the 17hmr from a pistol will act much like the 17hm2 does from a rifle. It's still a very devisting round on small game (think Stingers) and not enough on larger things like coons and opposums.

Missouri Reb:

That's kinda what I figured.  A couple of local fellers are interested in buying them as coon hunting revolvers, but I wasn't gonna recommend them over the convertible .22 Single Sixes.

Much obliged,

I assume they only want 1 hole.
It's going to be incredibly unreliable though as far as killing the coons.

The 22mag is a FAR better choice...and they can use the 22lr if they wish.
I don't think that's an opinion...I think that's an undisputed fact  ;D

We aren't allowed to hunt with pistols here, but the 17HMR rifles are walking out the door they are so popular.
All my cowboy gun's calibres start with a 4! It's gotta be big bore and whomp some!
