Okay, still have tons of questions to ask, and need help !
« on: October 17, 2008, 08:42:58 PM »
 :)howdy Pards,
Got to go and shoot my Sharps tonight, to try and get it dialed in a little better ::) So we set up the 100yard target and went and set up the bench and bags , spotting scope.
Now other than 1 cowboy shoot, I havn't had a rifle in 20 years! Back then life hadn't beat me down, I wasn't one moriphine ever day for this pain, and also valum, and 3 other drugs.  I never ever shoot black powder, that is a new game! The fire trigger is set to a hair, so I was wondering should I tigten it a little?
Okay here is what I want to ask: Right now, I am using mixed cases, dropping 56gr of ffg, droped down a 24" drop tube, using a 60 thou fiber wad, 500 grain pointed bullet, just seateded so I push the last 1/8" by had. After 18 shots, I got the last 2 close, I know that I might be pulling them some! Could it be because I am using mix bras that that is hurting my sighting in, or am I just pulling the shoots, or could it be, that 56gr of ffg isn't enough powder to get a constant velocity?

I would be great full for any and all help!

UH, Ace.  see my answer (and others) on the Darksider's forum.  Where you asked, too.

 ;)

56 gr. should be consistent for velocity.  Mixt brass MAY play a part.  Also, did you de-burr the flashholes?  From what I've heard from experts, this little step is VERY important.

Also, like I mentioned on the D-sider's Den, think:  MORE Lube!

I have some 405 gr. bullets that I bought that are lubed with SPG.     3 lube grooves worth.

The rounds I loaded and shot needed as least DOUBLE the amount of lube!  You could see down the barrel to about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way (a 32" bbl.) where the hard fouling started because all the lube was used up.

IMO the amount thrown has little to do with consistency. What is important is uniform compression. Get a powder compression die to get the best uniformity.

Mixed cases is bad IMO. For best accuracy I make sure every round is identical.

If you have a junk 38/357 expander die, just sweat solder a 38 case to it, fits right inside the 45 case. :)

Thanks Pard, I can do that, then i guy can set it to compress the powder the same every time, with any luck i will  get that done! Order 5lbs of 50/50, so i got my 1/40 figured out! Re sluged my barrel, 457, then I check some bullets that were casted no sized or lubed, and they measure out 459. So I think, one I get some tin in my mix like you told me Del., I will get some uniformed bullets, my brother ownes a big body shop and he loaned me one of his real nice digital scales, and I should be able to mould and seperate them buy the nats.

Del. thanks for the call and getting me lined out! I might have to go buy a little 50/50 from a friend, and get some bullets loaded up, and have him shoot it!
Thanks again for the call!

It's not a problem.  Ask the folks who know me - I don't handle guns when my meds are working strong.  As do my friends in the same boat.  Ya gotta be honest with yourself and stick to the talkin' shooting, not DOING the shooting!
