taking apart an 1851

I'm curious to know if it is necessary to take out the screw above the barrel wedge before pulling the wedge out?  Also do you pull the wedge all the out to where it seperates from the barrel or can you pulll it out partially?  I had one about 2 years ago to convert but sold it now I'm aching to have a pair for matches I just don't want to damage anything when I get them.  If that screw doesn't have to come out what is it for?

Thanks, it's nice to have a bunch of knowledgeable people around to answer basic questions.  When I bought mine through Cabella's the guy on the phone didn't have a clue as to what that screw was for.
