Weather??
« on: February 15, 2006, 02:22:30 PM »
We are palnning on leaving Madison tomorrow morning.  It looks as if we will be running right into the teeth of a Winter storm.  We haven't decided on our route yet.  One thought is to take 20 across Iowa to get out of the storm the fastest, but that might also be the area of heaviest snow.

We normally would take 151 from Madison to Cedar Rapids and then go South on 380 to 80 and then West to Council Bluffs.  This still might be the best route ???

Heck I don't know I guess we will play it by ear and decide as we drive.

Any thoughts?

Hi Will, never been on 151, but have on 380 and 80, I'm sure they will keep it plowed and do everything they can if we get what they expect, when travleing I always pick the busiest road traveled, they always have snow plows going on these routes, IMHO.

We're starting early afternoon tomorrow, unless verk is called off then we would start sooner. Going across on 21 to Tomah, I90 to LaCrosse, and I35 to I80. It looks like it might be an interesting drive to say the least. I will but the Suburban in 4WD all the way there if I have to.

Will,
I don't know if I90 to I39 to I88 (or I80) will be any better.  ???

Last report I heard today indicated that the "experts" have downgraded this winter storm. Initially they were saying 4-9 inches. Now they are talking 4" max! Hope they are right because I'd like to have it over and cleaned up when we leave Friday morning to head out there.

It won't start snowing till morning, in a line from Sioux City going SE toward DesMoines.  The predicted 4" won't be down till 4 or 5pm.  Stick with I380 to I80 and you'll do fine.  Worst part of winter storms on I80 in Iowa is from Newton (40 miles east of Des Moines) into Des Moines.  Doesn't sound like it's going to be very bad.  Proceed with boldness.  I'm 50 miles NE of Des Moines.

Wife and my two daughters are leaving either Thursday night or Friday morning. (early)

US35 down to Des Moines and then onto US80.

From that I gather, most of the "nasty" stuff should be farther south and to the west by Friday.

I'm in Clear Lake -- That's in North Central Iowa.  It's fluries right now 9:30 PM -- Little accululation.  The forcast here is for most of it to hit the north Iowa, Southern Minnesota line.  The snow is fluffy and will blow which could be a bigger problem.
Watch the reports if you believe them ----  We've had forcasts all day going from 4" to 12".

It started snowing at 9 PM. Had 2" at 7 AM. The wind picked up to about 25 MPH at 8:45 AM. We are supposed to get 10-12" 'fore it's over tonight. I just heard the office is going to close at 10:30 AM.

It be icy in the Omaha CB area, the radio this morning said the worst stretch in Newbrasskey is I-80 from the Platte River to Omaha, mostly snow north, ice with a bit of snow on it south, Slicker than snot on a greased door knob in Lincoln.

Well we left home at 8:15 this morning.  We are back now at about 11:07  We made a total of 45 miles in nearly 3 hours :(  It is just too bad out there to try and make it today.  We had about 200 feet of visibility and the windshield wipers couldn't keep the ice off the windshield.  We kept having to stop and clear the ice off which isn't a good option when you are driving white van :(.  Hopefully it will clear and we can restart later.  We have about 8" on the ground with another 4 to 6 to come.  looks like mother nature saved all of January and February's snow for a 2 day event.
Hopefully we will see you either tonight or tomorrow.

Down here on highway 92 we got less than an inch of snow on the ground right now (1201 hours) Sounds like I-80 is the "line" for weather this time. :(

Well it's clear here now.  Looks as if it's clear from here to Dubuque.  We might leave within the hour.
