1876 - 45-75 Accuracy
« on: July 21, 2008, 11:48:59 AM »
If you have had a range session with your 1876 please post the results regarding accuracy. I don't know what to expect. Mine has shot 3 inches at 100 yards after cleaning with one wet patch after 10 shots. I plan to put aperture sights on it once I learn to 'shoot dirty'.

Thanks in advance ;D

As mentioned in another thread, I just took mine out and shot 10 rounds yesterday.  Unfortunately I am going to have to go again because as I shot, I was adjusting the stock sights to see what level I needed to be on, so I was all over the paper with the first four.  The others grouped about 4in although I feel that was due to me still getting comfy with the rifle and the sights.

What an awesome rifle.  ;D ;D ;D

McLernon, 3 inches at 100 with open sights is pretty dang good. :)

Come on Mc - the rifle can do better than 3" @ 100  ;D
Put a vernier on it and a Swiss Diopter front sight.  You'll be amazed at the increased accuracy
100yd Target

And here's what it can do at 200 and 300yds.  The X marked yellow patches plus the holes marked with an X are the 300yd POI's.  It was real windy when I was shooting 200yds and then the wind layed down for 300yds... but this is a same day target with the same recipe that I shot 100yds

HI John Boy:

I see you are using 5744 smokeless. I am determiined to get BP to work for me. I find the rifle cleans up much easier with BP and I bought a tumbler to clean the cases. Works well.

I'll be keeping tabs on your progress(if you post) as I don't know if I'll be successfull with BP. Time will tell.

I wrote you a PM on the specs on the vernier/diopter sights you put on yours. Interested, as I have old eyes.

Happy shooting

Well keeping the barrel cool and blowing between shots to keep the BP fouling soft has a great effect on accuracy. I am shooting a 3 groove BACO FB boolit 20:1 alloy with no grease cookie. Rifle slugs at 457 and the boolit is 459. With open iron sights I can now hold to about 4 inch group size. This is as good as I can see. I plan to fit a set of aperture/ globe sights and will see what I can do out to 300 yards.

By the way this is with a full 75 gr FFg load, compressed with compression die

So far I think I'll persevere with BP but have been reading reports on 5744 with interest.
