10 favorite Westerns of all time
« on: November 28, 2005, 05:31:36 PM »
This may have been done before... sorry if it's a re-post but....

today, a few of us were hashing out who our favorite STAR was... Mine was the Duke always was, always will be.

But  topic turned to : "What are your 10 favorite Westerns of all time" ?

First (for me ) but not necessarily in order was....

"The Man who Shot Liberty Valance"
" Outlaw Josie Wales "
" Silverado "
"Lonesome Dove" ( the first one ! OK it's a MINI Series  ,but still great )
" Dances with Wolves "
 " She wore a Yellow Ribbon "
 " Rio Grande "
  "Ft Apache"
"Quigley Down Under" ( it so west it's an Eastern )
  "Open Range "

Ok so that's ten ( but I'm gonna put John Ford's Cavalry Trilogy as one dang it ,   ;) because I need room to list two more )

 "The Magnificent Seven "

and the toss up " Wild Bill " or (A modern Western) "Last of the Dog Soldiers" ...oh yeah ! "Unforgiven"

well these are mine and I'll stand by them.... what are yours ?
I'm betting by your choices ,  there will be a reason to recall "The Top 15 or ? favorite Westerns of all time

when planets align...do the deal !

This is a tough one, but I will chime in as well.  These are in no particular order.

Silverado
Tombstone
Rio Lobo (makes me feel comfortable)
Rio Bravo (Proof that Dean Martin could act very well)
Searchers (Proof that the Duke could act with depth (contrary to some's opinions))
Outlaw Jose Wales (Hey I am a Missouri Gorilla, required viewing)
Ride with the Devil (Hey, still a missouri gorilla)
For a few Dollars More (my favorite all time Italian Western, Van Cleef as Mortimer is classic)
Big Jake
Rooster Cogburn (the sequel, but KAtherine Hepburn was perfect opposite an aging Duke.)

Runner up (say somewhere about 38? would be The Outlaw  :o)

What?? Nobody voted for "Hell to Pay"  (probably should be, "Hell, I paid??")

Just kidding with that one.  But seriously I haven't seen a vote for "Blazing Saddles" either and that should be on everyones list!! ;D ;D

One I could have added I watched on TV last night. "Bite the Bullet." The story is not bad but the scenes with some of the characters are good. It stars: Gene Hackman, Candice Bergen, James Colburn, Ben Johnson (my favorite cowboy), Ian Bannen, and Jan-Michael Vincent. Its about a horse race and some scenes and dialogs are terrific. It won an Academy Award for music and sound.

Gettysburg,  Glory & Gods & Generals are not what would be call westerns , so you have three more choices coming.

But thanks for the kudos,  I worked on all three .... :)

does anyone know the name of the movie with Charlton Heston (I think) where they do a fair amount of very long range shooting usually at people.  I think Heston is a marshall or some sort of lawman after the bad guy of course.  I only saw part of this one once a long time ago.
