Adding wood/bone grips to pre-owned SAA
« on: June 10, 2007, 10:44:30 AM »
I have the opportunity to purchase a USFA SAA with the black rubber grips.  I'd like to add wooden grips to the gun but with Colts, the manufacturing tolerances differ, gun to gun, so it's very hard to fit after-market grips.  Has anyone tried to add USFA grips to an existing gun?  Much fitting involved?

Thanks,

Rich

I've seen Colt grips on a USFA and from the looks of them, it didn't look like they had to do a massive fitting job on them.

All Colt original manufacture grips are purposely oversized to allow for individual frame differences - their final fitting happens with the last buffing of the triggerguard and backstrap.

That said - there are many aftermarket grips available - but I think that the vast bulk of them will fall under Colt's guidelines, so that you can do the final proper fitting.

Bone or Wood are fitted similarly - by trial and error - as are the various faux 'Ivories' that are out there.

Mask the polished metal to avoid any file marks or sandpapering - go slow and be precise - and you should be well-rewarded with your efforts.

Good Luck.
