Got my John Wayne Ammo, now waiting for guns.
« on: April 18, 2007, 09:41:27 PM »
My boxes of Winchester John Wayne Comemmerative Ammo came in today.  Now I wonder when my USFA John Wayne Guns will come in.  I am sure hoping the television is flooded with John's movies this year in celebration of his 100th birthday.  I can almost feel those USFA sixguns in my hands.  I got chills thinking about it, or is it because my wife is near and may ask me that question that all men dread.  "What did that cost?"  My usual response is "I got it at a great price!"

Good ta hear, Doc!

Hey, BTW, I was able to get some of the 22x17 and 8x10 posters/flyers of the John Wayne ammo and some 8x10 flyers of the JW '92 rifle as well last weekend at the NRA show in St. Louis.  I also copped one of the 17x17 Winchester horse & rider posters from the Win Ammo booth.

Now I just need to order me up some of that ammo to boot!

I was sad, too, to not see USFA at the NRA show.  Would have been very nice!

I heard they were not there.  Must be too busy making sweet sixguns and other firearms.

I saw some John Wayne ammo today...$39.95 for a box of .45 colt.  30-30 ammo was cheaper, I think $29.95  It said "DUKE" on the bottom of the casing.
What do you do with it?  Put it on the shelf and just collect it?  Im sure you dont shoot it.

What can I tell, I am a John Wayne Nut.  I have John Wayne Ammo from the 80's to go with my John Wayne Comemmeratives of the 80's.  This year after ordering John Wayne Comemmeratives from Winchester and USFA, I ordered some of the new Winchester John Wayne Ammo to go with them.  This time around the ammo beat the guns.  But yes, for me anyhow, this is strictly for a NIB conditioned collection.  I also have a signed first edition book of John's America, Why I love her.

I wish USFA would recreate the actual gun he carried in most of his movies.  put an aged finish on one of their guns with the aged fake ivory grips and sell it at a price the average guy could afford.  Maybe partner it up with a "Duke" type gun rig and a large loop lever 92 Winchester and you would have a great set.   What do you all think?

If you look at the USFA web site, they show a John Wayne  Red River D pistol that has what they call a Antique Patina Aged Blue finish.  I e-mailed and asked if that was available on any gun and was referred to the Gunslinger model with the aged patina.  The John Wayne gun looks more blue than the Gunslingers I have seen in pictures.  Does anyone have a contact at the factory that can confirm that the finish on the JW gun is the regular Gunslinger finish?

I would imagine that the finish on the Red River model is the same as the Gunslinger.
Those web site pictures are a bit deceiving.  I have seen and handled a Gunslinger model and the finish is actually more of a steel gray, not the mottled black/blue finish that is depicted in the photos.  The actual guns are much more attractive than the pictures would lead you to believe.

Capt.
Do you think that finish would be similar to what the Duke's guns looked like in all his films?
By the way, does anyone actually have one of these?  I would love to hear how the finish holds up and if you need to do anything special when cleaning it.  Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Nlue/CC and even the new all blue looks pretty good, but I would be afrad to use them much for fear of ruining that great finish.  Now I know everyone will say, then buy the Rodeo, but that jsut doesn't look "right" to me.  Seems like the Gunfighter may be the perfect compromise.  It looks correct, but isn't so perferct that you hate to shoot the guns... Know what I mean.

Bill,
I'm no expert on JW's guns but from what I seem to recall from pictures I have seen, his was more along the line of "holster worn" blue/CCH.  The Gunslinger model has more of an gun metal gray, "antiqued" look to it.
The one I saw had the aged Tru-Ivory grips and it was a beautiful gun.  I liked it much better than the Rodeo.  Looks just like a 130 year old gun.

Holy Toledo,

My FFL called and said my John Wayne .44-40 ammo came in, so I went to pick it up.  I went into shock when he told me it was twice the price of the John Wayne .45 Colt ammo.  Ouch!  I hope that it can hold such a priced value in the future after such a high offering right out of the gate.  However, it was a purchase made with the heart, not as an investment.  Oh well!
