"New 72? "????

" It's offical i are now a 72 owner". New taylor, 72 , but it's marked "1871" on the barrel. It is a army model in .38 spl. The barrel is longer than a long summer day,( too long for me). Question,,, do i shoot it first or start polish'n & smooth'n the action, which grinds & jerks as ya attempt to pull the 12lb. hammer back . The army grip fits my hand fine , like the feel, of course i want to shoot heck out of it ,but not if there is a prepration i need to do first, "All in put excepted",start me right and i'll stay right( as right as i can). Back to the question,is it normal for the 1872 to be stamped " 1871" .

The "1871" was not marked on the barrels for a number of years but then Uberti started adding it and I think they all have it now.  I was told why a few years back but don't recall the reason.  Something about the guns needing some indicator of model.

First and foremost, insure the Barrel/Arbor fit is correct.  Been some discussion of that on the board lately, so be sure and read thru those threads.

Thank you sir;  I have already pulled the barrel & cyl., the cyl., showed a lite-lite drag on the front ,but the the cyl., moved back ever so slightly. Please remember this my first experience w/ aOT. The wedge,,,,is going to take some pratice, . I pulled the barrel off ,then put it back on the arbor & let it hang down it looked stright & true w? the base and pins, Putting the wedge back,,,,?  more pratice.

The Open Top was never really assigned a model year. I've always heard them referred to as "1871-1872 Open Top". Never as a specific 1871 or 1872 model. I think some folks think it has something to do with the patent dates but those dates are on other guns as well. In Colt's records, the 1871-1872 Open Top was designated "42/Cal. Army Breech Loading Revolver", according to McDowell's book.

My Cimarron has no markings as to model on the barrel. Only the caliber/maker/importer stamps and the patent dates on the frame.
