'61 Colt conversion
« on: February 11, 2012, 03:41:57 PM »
Instead of continuing the hijack of another thread I thought I would post some pics here of a Howell (R&D Beloit WI) full conversion of an 1861 Navy. I bought this as "used" and it was pretty used UP ::)

Originally I posted that it was built on a Second Gen Colt but after really bothering to compare it is obviously renumbered and re-rolled with Kenny Howells' own roll die........

If you look on either side of the serial number you'll see that the barrel flat has been filed to the point the alignment pins are disrupting the steel because of how thin it is.......

I had to repair the broken boss on the ejector and the loose arbor as well as fix some internal issues (it was plum worn out)......

But all - in - all it is a pretty neat piece! The checkered hammer and ejector head look pretty nice.....

Oh........I did not "stake" the filler in the rammer hole, it was that way when I bought it.......

The workmanship on this one was not too bad when it was converted (except the "lawyer stuff on the bottom of the barrel) and the markings are well done.....

Here is a link to the other post where we started discussing the "Howell" 1861 conversion:

61's are very sleek.

I think if I get another set of Colt style C&Bs and or conversions they will be 61's.

Heck if'n I follow my style with the 51's what I should do is get one set of 61's with a gated conversion and one set with the old style firing pins in the backplate...
