"Loose" Cylinder - R&D 1851 Gated Conversion
« on: March 11, 2009, 03:15:45 PM »
I have a cylinder on one of my gated, R&D 1851 conversions that doesn't lock completely in place in three of the indexing slots.

With the hammer down, I can turn the cylinder about halfway BACK to the previous cartridge setting.  It does "kind of" lock in the correct setting but it doesn't take much torque to pop it out and back spin it.  It only does this on three of the stops and they are next to each other.

This cylinder does the same thing when I switch to my other 1851 so I am pretty sure it is the cylinder.

Anyone else have this problem?  Anything you think I should worry about?  Like I said, it doesn't do it on it's own but I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be doing this at all.

Does R&D just sell the replacement cylinder?

Any help or info greatly appreciated...

Remove the cylinder and bolt and then measure the thickness of the bolt head and the width of each cylinder locking slot.  Sounds like the bolt isn't going all the way into the slots.  If that is the case, thin the bolt head a couple of thousands.
