A new game?
« on: September 01, 2008, 02:04:04 PM »
How about car brands / marques that have "fallen", disappeared, no longer exist.

Here are the rules:

1. Must have been a stand alone brand.  By that I mean Corvette wouldn't count because it has always been a Chevrolet, but Cadillac would...it has always been a brand of its own...but El Dorado wouldn't.  Capice?

2.  Must have been an American brand.  We can do foreign makes later.

3. Must have produced passenger cars.  They could have produced pickups, delivery vans, dump trucks, farm tractors,  or airplanes, BUT THEY HAD TO HAVE BUILT coupes, convertibles, sedans, roadsters, station wagons, hard tops or some other style of passenger car as well.

I'll kick it off with two:

1. Marmon

2. Essex

Who's up next?

No more Plymouth?  What ever shall we do?

Very good, Dell.  How many more can we remember?  Any stories to go with them are welcome, too.

Marmon: an old man in my home town in northern Utah had one the size of the Queen Mary.  He had a nicely letteredsign on the back that said "That's MARMON, not MORMON".  He and his wife shopped at the grocery where I worked and I alsays marvelled at how much room that car had: head room, foot room, hip room, leg room.  The dang thing might have had a billiard room and a dining room, too.  No passenger car today has that much pure vastness in its interior.

He once told me that he had paid $2,700 for it new.  I told my dad that, and the year the car was made, and he told me he had bought a house a year later for about 25% of that.

Believe they was stand alone, at least before WW II, OT. Think Kaiser bought them up late '40''s, early '50's. Got me thinkin' of another, Nash..............Buck 8) ::)

Good one.  Neigbor is restoring a Golden hawk Gran Turismo.  Just put a 327 (Yeah, A THREE TWENTY SEVEN) Chevy in it with a Turbo Hydramatic...and it fits.

Willys is good.  They built a lot of great little cars...and some marvelous Jeeps.

Kinda got the whole show off the ground.   My Mom said her dad owned one, but I have never seen a picture or found any other reference.

The first car I ever owned was a 1936 (?) Nash Twin Ignition Six.  That was my "Untouchables Car" in high school.

Forgot the Locomoble.  Thanks. Forgot the Tucker, too and didn't mention it.

Packard was / is my all time favorite touring car.  Never owned one, just drooled a lot.

Stanley is a good call, too.

There was one that had a German name but I think it was built here.  Dussendorf or somethin like that.  I ain't gonna Google it cause that ruins the fun fer me.
