As an X military guy, I've always had the belief that the application of brut force in the appropriate amount to resolve the situation was the wisest course of action.  I've never felt threatened by deer.  A 30-30 or 44-40 is just fine.
Anything that looks at me as FOOD on the other hand, requires as much brute force as I can carry.
8 Bore anyone??

Coffinmaker

PS:  Followed a thread a while back on a guy that built his own 8 bore.  Lordy I'd like to have one.

A lady once asked Peter Capstick why he carried a 700 nitro-express.  He replied:

"Because Madame, they don't make an 800 nitro-extress."

I was severly threatened by a deer one time, two weeks before rifle season and I was hunting coyotes, a very shallow creek with low banks and about 50 feet seperated us as he pawed, snorted, beat the brush with his anlers and in no uncertain terms explained to me those were his does. ::)

If he would have came down the bank I was going to kill him if those fragile varnmints bullets would have done it. ::)  My brother heard my cussin'and yellin' at him over 300 yards away.  It worked, he left, bucks in rut sometimes do kill folks, watch the video of they guy that put the deer scent on him sometime if you get the chance, nasty.

Books, that was a 600 Nitro, Capstick had passed on before H&H made the 700's. ;D
