Does anyone remember this muzzleloader gunmaker?
« on: January 06, 2009, 12:04:05 AM »
Years ago when the internet was still in it's infancy and my Compuserve bill was more than my mortgage payment, there were several shooter's forums around even then.  This is when 5 1/4" floppies were state of the art.

ANYHOW, one one of the forums there was a gunsmith that made his own muzzleloaders from scratch, whose tag line was "Store up some powder and flints, boys, the rest we can make, if need be" (or close to it).  We had some great discussions, many on surviving future gun bans.  Wish I could find him, or he may a member on this very forum.  Does anyone remember this gunsmith?  Been meaning to ask this for years.

don't know if it wold be him or not, but Doc Carlson of Upper Missouri Trading company in Crofton NE has been making muzzle loaders and gun parts from scratch for as long as I can remember.  You can still get a Hepburn or roiling block action from him to build a rifle around.

Howdy Goatlips,
Do you happen to know the state or area the gunsmith was from?

My cowboy Santa gave me a nifty old book. The Blackpowder guide, published in 1969. In the reference section there are a number of gunsmiths that made flints and caplocks, side hammers and underhammers listed. I noticed one sort of near you listed in Ann Arbor. Another in Indiana. Of course they might be on the other side by now, but you never know. My Santa was very generous this year and I would be willing to share the info with you  ;)

Fact is I like that book so much, I just might give a Dixie kit some serious thought.  :)
