.357 and .38 Special loads.
« on: October 08, 2015, 04:23:48 AM »
Still trying  to get it right........I'm reloading for .38 in my Uberti revolvers and .357 in my Rossi 92. I've read here that you can use the same powder load in both, HP38, that is handy. However I've changed my bullet from 158 LRNFP to 125. I find this combination more problematic if I aim to keep the same powder charge. Also, I am aware that CAS shooters use lighter loads. I used 3.7 grains of HP-38 for the heavier 158 bullet but what would I use for the lighter bullet if I want to use the same load in both revolver and rifle?
Whew........

My problem, if it is one, is that 3.7 grains of HP38 was good for both .38 and .357 cases with a 158 lead bullet. But after reading and taking advice I switched to a lighter bullet namely 125 lead. I still want to reload with the same powder charge for both but the .357 round out of a Rossi rifle is giving me pause for thought. I want light cowboy loads, I want to load the same powder charge...........has anyone tested a similar bullet/powder combination that satisfies?

With the lighter bullet you will need to use a larger powder charge but to say exactly how much more will be satisfactory in the two case sizes will need some experimentation.  I would recommend that you go to the referenced website for data and see if you find a combination that you like in both .38 and .357.  If I was trying to find such a charge I would try a mid-range charge for the .38 special as a starting point.

Good luck,

If I hear you correctly, your problem is that you're worrying.  Stop doing that.

You should be GTG with that load.  Many of us run less than that amount of powder with 105 bullets and have no problems.
