Colt .32-20
« on: February 11, 2012, 02:12:57 PM »
I think it works the other way around but can any of the more modern .32 cartridges be fired in a 3rd generation Colt SAA  chambered in .32-20. Anyone have any experience with this caliber in a SAA ? Thanks.

The 32-20 is, according to Cartridges of the World, a tapered case. Just based on that I'd say 'no'.
Someone with actual experience may know better.

I'd owned one with a 7 1/2" barrel years ago - it's definitely a tapered case.

As an aside, many, many were converted over to .45 Colt, during the heyday of the TV Western and the 'Golden Age' of Westerns.

The simple answer to your question is an unequivocal no.  The .32-20 is not like any modern cartridge.  I have a pair.  Because of the small bore the gun weighs more than a .45 and the recoil is mild.  Works well with smokeless or BP.

While not falling off the trees, ammo and components are available for this round.  It is a good one on its own.
