colt accuracy and bore dimensions?

Been thinking about getting a "real" colt.  What's the word on the newer colts?  I remember reading somewhere that some of the 45's had oversize chambers in the .455 realm and a .451 grove size?  Has this been corrected?  The reason I remember was an article about a smith taking 357 cylinders and boring them to .452 to correct this.

HANDLOADER magazine had an interesting article on Colt .45 barrel and throat dimensions in this month's issue.  Confirms what most shooters have know for years.  The bores have varied from .451/452 to .454/455.  The throats have varied from .450 to .458 depending on the time period the guns were produced.  You should be able to pick up the magazine at a book store or even a large grocery store.

That's part of the problem.  As expensive as colts are I had better not need to do anything to it.  A friend showed me his, it's absolutly beautiful.  But can it shoot as well as it looks?

There are hundreds of thousands of these things out there.  People are shooting them every day with no idea what the bore or chambers are and having a perfectly fine time popping beer cans or whatever else they are doing with them.  The "experts" all say to slug the bore and measure the chambers before ever firing the first round down range.  Spend a ton of money getting the forcing cone reamed to 11.634 degrees, reaming the chamber mouths etc., and then they take them cowboy shooting where the furthest target is ten yards.  Baloney.  I NEVER slug a bore or measure a chamber or ream a forcing cone until after the gun has been shot and a few different bullet/powder combinations have been tried.  If the gun won't hit a hubcap at ten yards, then its time to start measuring and slugging.

I understand that, however, I don't normally use 73's for CAS.  Also I like to get the most accuracy possible.  And I have and do occasionally shoot pistols at 100 yard targets.  And while most pistol shooting is 20-30 yards on steel in my back yard I sometimes like to see what there capable of.  With modern manufacturing there's no excuse for way oversize chambers, at least not on a gun as expensive as the Colt.  Do they hold there tolerances, or are they all over the place gun to gun?

Pettifogger, some people want better than SASS "run & gun" garage door at 10 yd. accuracy as they may use the gun for other purposes or maybe they shoot NCOWS. You've heard of NCOWS I assume, where you actually have to aim.

Since this is CasCity I look at everything from a cowboy shooter's perspective and try to provide help to make the "cowboy" shooter more competitive.  Sometimes forget there are a few other types of shooters logged in.  If I were looking for a revolver to do 100 yard shooting I sure as heck wouldn't start with a fixed sight (skinny blade up front, notch in the frame in the rear) Single Action Army.  If you want a general purpose gun I would at least start with an adjustable sight New Frontier if I had to have a Colt.
