..357 load question fer ya!
« on: May 21, 2011, 08:08:42 PM »
I have a set of NV .4 1/2" .357`s coming. I have been shooting .45 for CAS.

What bullet do you fellers find or think will regulate best in my new six shooters when loaded for cas?
I don`t think I need cat pfart loads but don`t want hot loads either.

What load do you shoot and how does it regulate to the factory sights in your guns?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.  ;)

I like the 158 gr LRNFP with 5 gr clays for it is just under the SASS max speed limit  in 512 OMV bbl and I do not like having CAS ammo that resembles 9mm ammo....

People sometimes get an eye put out with that 100 gr or so lead-9mm stuff; however, it makes a "ding" on Them Thar Targets and play the gamer with pop-gun loads.....

So where do you want to play?     ???

yeti, I am fairly new to CAS (a little over 1 year) but have been a shooter since the early 60`s.

I shoot with the Wolverton Mt. Peace Keepers at the Wolverton Mt. Gun Club in Ariel WA.

We were shooting trap the day Mt St Hellens blew her top. The club was in the RED ZONE for the next 6 months.
Hard to believe it has been over 30 years!!!   :o

Thanks for the reply pard. I was going to try 158`s first with a warm CAS load .

Disclaimer: I have only shot a couple of CAS matches so far, but this is what I have done so far.

I am using 158 grn RNFP .38's on top of 3.5 bullseye 1.5 OAL (loaded long because I use these in my Marlin as well) and so far they have worked great. However, due to so many recommendations, I will be swapping to Trail Boss once this pound of powder is gone.
The load shoots to POA and knockdowns go down everytime. As close as the different bullet prices are, it is worth the extra $5/1000 to know that them knockdowns wont mock you  ;D

Waldo Bodfish and Chuck 100yd,

Welcome to CAS and RATS for you'll have way too much fun play'n this game with yur Rooogers!!  ;D

Bullseye was a very messy (dirty) powder for me (almost like shoot'n the black) and it was suggested to me to use the "flaky" style Clay's powder as it was cleaner burn and for those who use the Lite Loads the position problem was negated...  Trail Boss is kinda new to me but I do know it is a flaky style too as for how clean it burns onto yur irons I don't know.

Throttled Up light gr lead will knock the buggers down too....  I like both... throttled up and heavy lead!  ;D  ;D  ;D  In other post I call them Hornets!  :D

Down right embarrassing to have a knock-down throw yur lead back at ya... just embarrassing yes Sir...

I shoot .357 in my main match guns. I use S&S Casting 125gr RNFP projectiles over 4 grains of Clays. Mostly Starline Brass and only Federal or Remington primers (Fed's are softest). All my rounds are loaded on a Dillon XL650 and in position 5 on the press I use a Lee factory crimp die. All other dies are RCBS carbide. Knock downs are toast at all events and they slide through my 73 like melted butter.

;D

Great prices from this company on lead and shipping.  ;)
