After over 32 years in the Army - and schooled by a Dad who was an Infantry Top Kick - you'd've thought I'd know better than to volunteer, but I started by doing just that, so...

What I'll be doing - besides keeping this forum sort of pointed in the right direction - will be mostly dealing with the authentic gear, customs and dress of the Victorian Era.

I want to be able to assist a shooter in making his outfit more period-correct in the development of his pre-1900 character, so you'll see some thoughts on various things.

Indian Artifacts

And of course, Firearms of the American West

Now, that's what I'll be doing.
You'll also continue to see the early photos, and I'm sure that there'll be questions on all manner of things, and in fact, I'm counting on it.

I'll welcome any assistance in filling in the blanks, where your knowledge and experience will benefit shooters old and new.

Seriously, do you have any specific "do's and don'ts" we should be aware of?  Definitely don't want to be lookin' at an Article 15 or a Summary Court.

I figure that a sense of basic civility ought to prevail.

This particular forum - by its very nature - shouldn't lend itself to attacks of egotism, since no one's touting personality.
It'd be a bit hard to figure out how to do that sort of thing, when a guy's recommending a book...

Since this deals with the building of a persona, and the historically- accurate clothing and minutia that would go along with it, we shouldn't see anything like how to trick out a firearm in order to hold a mechanical advantage over a fellow shooter, and the merits of coil-springed, investment-cast  revolvers, or other hot buttons.

Probably won't see anything about Iraq, political affiliations, religious fervor, the fact that silicone exists for something other than waterproofing, or anything along the lines of internet jokes, either.

It ought to be interesting, informative and respectful and entertaining.

We're adults - we like to be treated fairly and with respect - and we really don't like drama in our daily lives, much less our 19th Century ones, so I figure that those "guidelines" ought to be just enough to serve as the curbs of the superhighway of communication.

Look at us - we're humans wandering and stumbling through Life - and if watching that isn't about the funniest thing in the world...
It's like watching puppies when there are Maple leaves in the backyard.

Seriously - if you're not having fun and not learning as you go along, then you really need to re-think your approach to life, since it isn't a permanent thing.

The movie quotes, the old photos, the discussions we'll have - they'll all factor into our having a greater appreciation of the era and the kinds of people that settled our Frontier.

Someone put a bullet between those eyes and get it hung up in a tree.  I am running upstairs for the saw, cleaver, knives and stones.  I might grab that mesh glove also, as you know I am a bit shakey at times.  We don't want any of my bllod mixed in. 

Ya know cowboys and most other folks in the "Old Wst" were not heathans, we must cook it fairly well done.   But I can do it and still keep it tender.

Mr. Moderator Sir:  Matt and I will be down to Rock Creek Station this weekend.  Bring a plate and come down if you want.  Anyone else is welcome also, but don't show up in your sandels, shorts and tank top or I will think you is a tourist.

Most cows in WI look like the first one. Less chance of getting hooked by a horn.

Most in Eastern Nebraska do, too.

On the other hand, there's a local guy a little North of Omaha with some Longhorns - God love him - and some folks out in the County raising Burros, as well as the various Buffalo ranches that spring up from time to time.

The problem with Longhorns is that you have to build special pens to work them. 

We have raised polled and horned beef critters.  Pros and cons to both.  Depending on your predation issues, I'd always go with polled (dehorned).  But, we have only horns (and a bit wild) herds out in Alpine, Hereford, Brangus and even real Longhorns (just got those in a default deal, Uncle Mo ain't pleased ).  Too many fangs and claws looking for a meal.
