Bullet ID help
« on: December 16, 2012, 11:26:48 AM »

There's an explanation of these bullets and where found at :

http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,10937.0.html

Just wondering if these might match up to a Colt .44 and would they have been in use with the 4th Cavalry in 1871?

The specs are:

11.5mm diameter
20mm long

Thanks for any help!

Need a little of you guy's expertise. I found ten more of these Bartholows about 5 feet from the original two.

Clearly a drop by someone. I was wondering how did the cavalry usually carry these bullets? What about the Indians? Could they have had these and dropped them in 1871? How did they carry them?

Been a productive search on this possible battle site, needing a little info though...

Thanks!

These indeed look like .44 Colt bullets.  However, the same bullet was used both in the .44 Colt CF round, and in the .44 paper cartridge for the M1860 revolver.  As well as several other percussion rounds of the period. Both the percussion 1860, and the Richards Conversion were in use in 1871.

I would speculate from the condition of the bullets that they were from long disintegrated .44 linen/foil percussion cartridges, provided in 6 round packets of either wood or pasteboard.

Civilize them with a Krag . . .
